Persecution by Protestants and Catholics, July 5
Ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. Matthew 10:22. Mar 194.1
There is no necessity for thinking that we cannot endure persecution; we shall have to go through terrible times.15The Review and Herald, April 29, 1890. Mar 194.2
The persecutions of Protestants by Romanism, by which the religion of Jesus Christ was almost annihilated, will be more than rivaled when Protestantism and popery are combined.16Manuscript 30, 1889. Mar 194.3
The commandment-keeping people of God erelong will be placed in a most trying position; but all those who have walked in the light, and diffused the light, will realize that God interposes in their behalf. When everything looks most forbidding, then the Lord will reveal His power to His faithful ones. When the nation for which God has worked in such a marvelous manner, and over which He has spread the shield of Omnipotence, abandons Protestant principles, and through its legislature gives countenance and support to Romanism in limiting religious liberty, then God will work in His own power for His people that are true. The tyranny of Rome will be exercised, but Christ is our refuge.17Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 206. Mar 194.4
When the leading churches of the United States, uniting upon such points of doctrine as are held by them in common, shall influence the state to enforce their decrees and to sustain their institutions, then Protestant America will have formed an image of the Roman hierarchy, and the infliction of civil penalties upon dissenters will inevitably result.18The Great Controversy, 445. Mar 194.5
The Scriptures teach that popery is to regain its lost supremacy, and that the fires of persecution will be rekindled through the time-serving concessions of the so-called Protestant world. In this time of peril we can stand only as we have the truth and the power of God…. The prospect of being brought into personal danger and distress, need not cause despondency, but should quicken the vigor and hopes of God’s people; for the time of their peril is the season for God to grant them clearer manifestations of his power.19Selected Messages 2:367-370. Mar 194.6

Through spiritualism, Satan appears as a benefactor of the race, healing the diseases of the people, and professing to present a new and more exalted system of religious faith; but at the same time he works as a destroyer. His temptations are leading multitudes to ruin. Intemperance dethrones reason; sensual indulgence, strife, and bloodshed follow. Satan delights in war, for it excites the worst passions of the soul and then sweeps into eternity its victims steeped in vice and blood. It is his object to incite the nations to war against one another, for he can thus divert the minds of the people from the work of preparation to stand in the day of God. GC 589.1
Satan works through the elements also to garner his harvest of unprepared souls. He has studied the secrets of the laboratories of nature, and he uses all his power to control the elements as far as God allows. When he was suffered to afflict Job, how quickly flocks and herds, servants, houses, children, were swept away, one trouble succeeding another as in a moment. It is God that shields His creatures and hedges them in from the power of the destroyer. But the Christian world have shown contempt for the law of Jehovah; and the Lord will do just what He has declared that He would—He will withdraw His blessings from the earth and remove His protecting care from those who are rebelling against His law and teaching and forcing others to do the same. Satan has control of all whom God does not especially guard. He will favor and prosper some in order to further his own designs, and he will bring trouble upon others and lead men to believe that it is God who is afflicting them. GC 589.2
While appearing to the children of men as a great physician who can heal all their maladies, he will bring disease and disaster, until populous cities are reduced to ruin and desolation. Even now he is at work. In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hailstorms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power. He sweeps away the ripening harvest, and famine and distress follow. He imparts to the air a deadly taint, and thousands perish by the pestilence. These visitations are to become more and more frequent and disastrous. Destruction will be upon both man and beast. “The earth mourneth and fadeth away,” “the haughty people … do languish. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.” Isaiah 24:4, 5. GC 589.3
And then the great deceiver will persuade men that those who serve God are causing these evils. The class that have provoked the displeasure of Heaven will charge all their troubles upon those whose obedience to God’s commandments is a perpetual reproof to transgressors. It will be declared that men are offending God by the violation of the Sunday sabbath; that this sin has brought calamities which will not cease until Sunday observance shall be strictly enforced; and that those who present the claims of the fourth commandment, thus destroying reverence for Sunday, are troublers of the people, preventing their restoration to divine favor and temporal prosperity. Thus the accusation urged of old against the servant of God will be repeated and upon grounds equally well established: “And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim.” 1 Kings 18:17, 18. As the wrath of the people shall be excited by false charges, they will pursue a course toward God’s ambassadors very similar to that which apostate Israel pursued toward Elijah. GC 590.1
The miracle-working power manifested through spiritualism will exert its influence against those who choose to obey God rather than men. Communications from the spirits will declare that God has sent them to convince the rejecters of Sunday of their error, affirming that the laws of the land should be obeyed as the law of God. They will lament the great wickedness in the world and second the testimony of religious teachers that the degraded state of morals is caused by the desecration of Sunday. Great will be the indignation excited against all who refuse to accept their testimony. GC 590.2
Satan’s policy in this final conflict with God’s people is the same that he employed in the opening of the great controversy in heaven. He professed to be seeking to promote the stability of the divine government, while secretly bending every effort to secure its overthrow. And the very work which he was thus endeavoring to accomplish he charged upon the loyal angels. The same policy of deception has marked the history of the Roman Church. It has professed to act as the vicegerent of Heaven, while seeking to exalt itself above God and to change His law. Under the rule of Rome, those who suffered death for their fidelity to the gospel were denounced as evildoers; they were declared to be in league with Satan; and every possible means was employed to cover them with reproach, to cause them to appear in the eyes of the people and even to themselves as the vilest of criminals. So it will be now. While Satan seeks to destroy those who honor God’s law, he will cause them to be accused as lawbreakers, as men who are dishonoring God and bringing judgments upon the world. GC 591.1
God never forces the will or the conscience; but Satan’s constant resort—to gain control of those whom he cannot otherwise seduce—is compulsion by cruelty. Through fear or force he endeavors to rule the conscience and to secure homage to himself. To accomplish this, he works through both religious and secular authorities, moving them to the enforcement of human laws in defiance of the law of God. GC 591.2
Those who honor the Bible Sabbath will be denounced as enemies of law and order, as breaking down the moral restraints of society, causing anarchy and corruption, and calling down the judgments of God upon the earth. Their conscientious scruples will be pronounced obstinacy, stubbornness, and contempt of authority. They will be accused of disaffection toward the government. Ministers who deny the obligation of the divine law will present from the pulpit the duty of yielding obedience to the civil authorities as ordained of God. In legislative halls and courts of justice, commandment keepers will be misrepresented and condemned. A false coloring will be given to their words; the worst construction will be put upon their motives. GC 592.1
As the Protestant churches reject the clear, Scriptural arguments in defense of God’s law, they will long to silence those whose faith they cannot overthrow by the Bible. Though they blind their own eyes to the fact, they are now adopting a course which will lead to the persecution of those who conscientiously refuse to do what the rest of the Christian world are doing, and acknowledge the claims of the papal sabbath. GC 592.2
The dignitaries of church and state will unite to bribe, persuade, or compel all classes to honor the Sunday. The lack of divine authority will be supplied by oppressive enactments. Political corruption is destroying love of justice and regard for truth; and even in free America, rulers and legislators, in order to secure public favor, will yield to the popular demand for a law enforcing Sunday observance. Liberty of conscience, which has cost so great a sacrifice, will no longer be respected. In the soon-coming conflict we shall see exemplified the prophet’s words: “The dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Revelation 12:17. Las persecuciones que sufrieron los protestantes de parte del romanismo, y por las cuales la religión de Jesucristo casi llegó a ser aniquilada, serán sobrepasadas cuando se unan el protestantismo y el papado.17Manuscrito 30, 1889.
El pueblo de Dios que guarda los mandamientos, en lo sucesivo será puesto en la situación más angustiosa, pero todos los que han andado en la luz y la han difundido comprenderán que Dios interviene en su favor. En este tiempo de peligro podremos resistir únicamente en la medida en que tengamos la verdad y el poder de Dios…
Las perspectivas de tener que enfrentar el peligro y las dificultades personales, no necesitan desanimarnos, sino que deberían avivar el vigor y las esperanzas del pueblo de Dios, porque el tiempo de peligro constituye la oportunidad de Dios para proporcionar una clara manifestación de su poder.20Mensajes Selectos 2:421, 422, 425.

El espiritismo hace aparecer a Satanás como benefactor de la raza humana, que sana las enfermedades del pueblo y profesa presentar un sistema religioso nuevo y más elevado; pero al mismo tiempo obra como destructor. Sus tentaciones arrastran a multitudes a la ruina. La intemperancia destrona la razón, los placeres sensuales, las disputas y los crímenes la siguen. Satanás se deleita en la guerra, que despierta las más viles pasiones del alma, y arroja luego a sus víctimas, sumidas en el vicio y en la sangre, a la eternidad. Su objeto consiste en hostigar a las naciones a hacerse mutuamente la guerra; pues de este modo puede distraer los espíritus de los hombres de la obra de preparación necesaria para subsistir en el día del Señor. CS 575.3
Satanás obra asimismo por medio de los elementos para cosechar muchedumbres de almas aún no preparadas. Tiene estudiados los secretos de los laboratorios de la naturaleza y emplea todo su poder para dirigir los elementos en cuanto Dios se lo permita. Cuando se le dejó que afligiera a Job, ¡cuán prestamente fueron destruidos rebaños, ganado, sirvientes, casas e hijos, en una serie de desgracias, obra de un momento! Es Dios quien protege a sus criaturas y las guarda del poder del destructor. Pero el mundo cristiano ha manifestado su menosprecio de la ley de Jehová, y el Señor hará exactamente lo que declaró que haría: alejará sus bendiciones de la tierra y retirará su cuidado protector de sobre los que se rebelan contra su ley y que enseñan y obligan a los demás a hacer lo mismo. Satanás ejerce dominio sobre todos aquellos a quienes Dios no guarda en forma especial. Favorecerá y hará prosperar a algunos para obtener sus fines, y atraerá desgracias sobre otros, al mismo tiempo que hará creer a los hombres que es Dios quien los aflige. CS 575.4
Al par que se hace pasar ante los hijos de los hombres como un gran médico que puede curar todas sus enfermedades, Satanás producirá enfermedades y desastres al punto que ciudades populosas sean reducidas a ruinas y desolación. Ahora mismo está obrando. Ejerce su poder en todos los lugares y bajo mil formas: en las desgracias y calamidades de mar y tierra, en las grandes conflagraciones, en los tremendos huracanes y en las terribles tempestades de granizo, en las inundaciones, en los ciclones, en las mareas extraordinarias y en los terremotos. Destruye las mieses casi maduras y a ello siguen la hambruna y la angustia; propaga por el aire emanaciones mefíticas y miles de seres perecen en la pestilencia. Estas plagas irán menudeando más y más y se harán más y más desastrosas. La destrucción caerá sobre hombres y animales. “La tierra se pone de luto y se marchita”, “desfallece la gente encumbrada de la tierra. La tierra también es profanada bajo sus habitantes; porque traspasaron la ley, cambiaron el estatuto, y quebrantaron el pacto eterno”. Isaías 24:4, 5 (VM). CS 576.1
Y luego el gran engañador persuadirá a los hombres de que son los que sirven a Dios los que causan esos males. La parte de la humanidad que haya provocado el desagrado de Dios lo cargará a la cuenta de aquellos cuya obediencia a los mandamientos divinos es una reconvención perpetua para los transgresores. Se declarará que los hombres ofenden a Dios al violar el descanso del domingo; que este pecado ha atraído calamidades que no concluirán hasta que la observancia del domingo no sea estrictamente obligatoria; y que los que proclaman la vigencia del cuarto mandamiento, haciendo con ello que se pierda el respeto debido al domingo y rechazando el favor divino, turban al pueblo y alejan la prosperidad temporal. Y así se repetirá la acusación hecha antiguamente al siervo de Dios y por motivos de la misma índole: “Y sucedió, luego que Acab vio a Elías, que le dijo Acab: ¿Estás tú aquí, perturbador de Israel? A lo que respondió: No he perturbado yo a Israel, sino tú y la casa de tu padre, por haber dejado los mandamientos de Jehová, y haber seguido a los baales”. 1 Reyes 18:17, 18 (VM). Cuando con falsos cargos se haya despertado la ira del pueblo, este seguirá con los embajadores de Dios una conducta muy parecida a la que siguió el apóstata Israel con Elías. CS 576.2
El poder milagroso que se manifiesta en el espiritismo ejercerá su influencia en perjuicio de los que prefieren obedecer a Dios antes que a los hombres. Habrá comunicaciones de espíritus que declararán que Dios los envió para convencer de su error a los que rechazan el domingo y afirmarán que se debe obedecer a las leyes del país como a la ley de Dios. Lamentarán la gran maldad existente en el mundo y apoyarán el testimonio de los ministros de la religión en el sentido de que la degradación moral se debe a la profanación del domingo. Grande será la indignación despertada contra todos los que se nieguen a aceptar sus aseveraciones. CS 577.1
La política de Satanás en este conflicto final con el pueblo de Dios es la misma que la seguida por él al principio de la gran controversia en el cielo. Hacía como si procurase la estabilidad del gobierno divino, mientras que por lo bajo hacía cuanto podía por derribarlo y acusaba a los ángeles fieles de esa misma obra que estaba así tratando de realizar. La misma política de engaño caracteriza la historia de la iglesia romana. Ha profesado actuar como representante del cielo, mientras trataba de elevarse por encima de Dios y de mudar su ley. Bajo el reinado de Roma, los que sufrieron la muerte por causa de su fidelidad al evangelio fueron denunciados como malhechores; se los declaró en liga con Satanás, y se emplearon cuantos medios se pudo para cubrirlos de oprobio y hacerlos pasar ante los ojos del pueblo y ante ellos mismos por los más viles criminales. Otro tanto sucederá ahora. Mientras Satanás trata de destruir a los que honran la ley de Dios, los hará acusar como transgresores de la ley, como hombres que están deshonrando a Dios y atrayendo sus castigos sobre el mundo. CS 577.2
Dios no violenta nunca la conciencia; pero Satanás recurre constantemente a la violencia para dominar a aquellos a quienes no puede seducir de otro modo. Por medio del temor o de la fuerza procura regir la conciencia y hacerse tributar homenaje. Para conseguir esto, obra por medio de las autoridades religiosas y civiles y las induce a que impongan leyes humanas contrarias a la ley de Dios. CS 577.3
Los que honran el sábado de la Biblia serán denunciados como enemigos de la ley y del orden, como quebrantadores de las restricciones morales de la sociedad, y por lo tanto causantes de anarquía y corrupción que atraen sobre la tierra los altos juicios de Dios. Sus escrúpulos de conciencia serán presentados como obstinación, terquedad y rebeldía contra la autoridad. Serán acusados de deslealtad hacia el gobierno. Los ministros que niegan la obligación de observar la ley divina predicarán desde el púlpito que hay que obedecer a las autoridades civiles porque fueron instituidas por Dios. En las asambleas legislativas y en los tribunales se calumniará y condenará a los que guardan los mandamientos. Se falsearán sus palabras, y se atribuirán a sus móviles las peores intenciones. CS 578.1
A medida que las iglesias protestantes rechacen los argumentos claros de la Biblia en defensa de la ley de Dios, desearán imponer silencio a aquellos cuya fe no pueden rebatir con la Biblia. Aunque se nieguen a verlo, el hecho es que están asumiendo actualmente una actitud que dará por resultado la persecución de los que se niegan en conciencia a hacer lo que el resto del mundo cristiano está haciendo y a reconocer los asertos hechos en favor del día de reposo papal. Los dignatarios de la iglesia y del estado se unirán para hacer que todos honren el domingo, y para ello apelarán al cohecho, a la persuasión o a la fuerza. La falta de autoridad divina se suplirá con ordenanzas abrumadoras. La corrupción política está destruyendo el amor a la justicia y el respeto a la verdad; y hasta en los Estados Unidos de la libre América, se verá a los representantes del pueblo y a los legisladores tratar de asegurarse el favor público doblegándose a las exigencias populares por una ley que imponga la observancia del domingo. La libertad de conciencia que tantos sacrificios ha costado no será ya respetada. En el conflicto que está por estallar veremos realizarse las palabras del profeta: “Airóse el dragón contra la mujer, y se fue para hacer guerra contra el residuo de su simiente, los que guardan los mandamientos de Dios, y tienen el testimonio de Jesús”.
