The Desire of Ages

If the leaders in Israel had received Christ, He would have honored them as His messengers to carry the gospel to the world. To them first was given the opportunity to become heralds of the kingdom and grace of God. But Israel knew not the time of her visitation. The jealousy and distrust of the Jewish leaders had ripened into open hatred, and the hearts of the people were turned away from Jesus. DA 231.3

The Sanhedrin had rejected Christ’s message and was bent upon His death; therefore Jesus departed from Jerusalem, from the priests, the temple, the religious leaders, the people who had been instructed in the law, and turned to another class to proclaim His message, and to gather out those who should carry the gospel to all nations. DA 232.1

As the light and life of men was rejected by the ecclesiastical authorities in the days of Christ, so it has been rejected in every succeeding generation. Again and again the history of Christ’s withdrawal from Judea has been repeated. When the Reformers preached the word of God, they had no thought of separating themselves from the established church; but the religious leaders would not tolerate the light, and those that bore it were forced to seek another class, who were longing for the truth. In our day few of the professed followers of the Reformers are actuated by their spirit. Few are listening for the voice of God, and ready to accept truth in whatever guise it may be presented. Often those who follow in the steps of the Reformers are forced to turn away from the churches they love, in order to declare the plain teaching of the word of God. And many times those who are seeking for light are by the same teaching obliged to leave the church of their fathers, that they may render obedience. DA 232.2

God has a church. It is not the great cathedral, neither is it the national establishment, neither is it the various denominations; it is the people who love God and keep His commandments. “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). Si los dirigentes de Israel hubiesen recibido a Cristo, los habría honrado como mensajeros suyos para llevar el Evangelio al mundo. A ellos fué dada primeramente la oportunidad de ser heraldos del reino y de la gracia de Dios. Pero Israel no conoció el tiempo de su visitación. I was instructed that destruction hath gone forth upon cities. The Word of the Lord will be fulfilled. (Isaiah 29:19-24) was repeated. I dared not move, not knowing where I was. I cried unto the Lord, What does it mean? These representations of destruction were repeated. Where am I? “In scenes I have represented that which will be; but warn My people to cease from putting their trust in men who are not obedient to My warnings and who despise My reproof, for the day of the Lord is right upon the world when evidence shall be made sure. Those who have followed the voices that would turn things upside down will themselves be turned where they cannot see, but will be as blind men.” 21LtMs, Ms 126, 1906, par. 7

In the night season I had a presentation. I did not seem to be in my own home in St. Helena. I was, I thought, awakened in the night with a great noise of cries of distress, and I saw the whole heavens lighted up. There were balls that looked like fire falling, and these balls looked as if full of arrows, and wherever they struck there were great calamities. The battle of Armageddon will be fought. And that day must find none of us sleeping. Wide awake we must be, as wise virgins having oil in our vessels with our lamps. The power of the Holy Ghost must be upon us and the Captain of the Lord’s host will stand at the head of the angels of heaven to direct the battle. Solemn events before us are yet to transpire. Are we emptying our hearts of all selfishness, and cleansing them, preparatory to receiving the latter rain from heaven?
Now is the time when we are to confess and forsake our sins, that they may go beforehand to judgment and be blotted out (The Review and Herald, November 19, 1908).

His heart of mercy is touched, His hand is still stretched out to save, while the door is closed to those who would not enter. The Remnant Church

Zechariah’s vision of Joshua and the Angel applies with peculiar force to the experience of God’s people in the closing up of the great day of atonement. The remnant church will be brought into great trial and distress. Those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus will feel the ire of the dragon and his hosts. Satan numbers the world as his subjects, he has gained control of the apostate churches; but here is a little company that are resisting his supremacy. If he could blot them from the earth, his triumph would be complete. As he influenced the heathen nations to destroy Israel, so in the near future he will stir up the wicked powers of earth to destroy the people of God. All will be required to render obedience to human edicts in violation of the divine law. Those who will be true to God and to duty will be menaced, denounced, and proscribed. They will “be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends.” CCh 352.2

Their only hope is in the mercy of God; their only defense will be prayer. As Joshua was pleading before the Angel, so the remnant church, with brokenness of heart and earnest faith, will plead for pardon and deliverance through Jesus their Advocate. They are fully conscious of the sinfulness of their lives, they see their weakness and unworthiness, and as they look upon themselves they are ready to despair. The tempter stands by to accuse them, as he stood by to resist Joshua. He points to their filthy garments, their defective characters. He presents their weakness and folly, their sins of ingratitude, their unlikeness to Christ, which has dishonored their Redeemer. He endeavors to affright the soul with the thought that their case is hopeless, that the stain of their defilement will never be washed away. He hopes to so destroy their faith that they will yield to his temptations, turn from their allegiance to God, and receive the mark of the beast. Satan urges before God his accusations against them, declaring that they have by their sins forfeited the divine protection, and claiming the right to destroy them as transgressors. He pronounces them just as deserving as himself of exclusion from the favor of God. “Are these,” he says, “the people who are to take my place in heaven and the place of the angels who united with me? While they profess to obey the law of God, have they kept its precepts? Have they not been lovers of self more than of God? Have they not placed their own interests above His service? Have they not loved the things of the world? Look at the sins which have marked their lives. Behold their selfishness, their malice, their hatred toward one another.” CCh 352.3

The people of God have been in many respects very faulty. Satan has an accurate knowledge of the sins which he has tempted them to commit, and he presents these in the most exaggerated light, declaring: “Will God banish me and my angels from His presence, and yet reward those who have been guilty of the same sins? Thou canst not do this, O Lord, in justice. Thy throne will not stand in righteousness and judgment. Justice demands that sentence be pronounced against them.” CCh 353.1

But while the followers of Christ have sinned, they have not given themselves to the control of evil. They have put away their sins, and have sought the Lord in humility and contrition, and the divine Advocate pleads in their behalf. He who has been most abused by their ingratitude, who knows their sin, and also their repentance, declares: “‘The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan.’ I gave My life for these souls. They are graven upon the palms of My hands.” CCh 353.2

The assaults of Satan are strong, his delusions are terrible; but the Lord’s eye is upon His people. Their affliction is great, the flames of the furnace seem about to consume them; but Jesus will bring them forth as gold tried in the fire. Their earthliness must be removed that the image of Christ may be perfectly reflected; unbelief must be overcome; faith, hope, and patience are to be developed. 5T 474.3

The people of God are sighing and crying for the abominations done in the land. With tears they warn the wicked of their danger in trampling upon the divine law, and with unutterable sorrow they humble themselves before the Lord on account of their own transgressions. The wicked mock their sorrow, ridicule their solemn appeals, and sneer at what they term their weakness. But the anguish and humiliation of God’s people is unmistakable evidence that they are regaining the strength and nobility of character lost in consequence of sin. It is because they are drawing nearer to Christ, and their eyes are fixed upon His perfect purity, that they so clearly discern the exceeding sinfulness of sin. Their contrition and self-abasement are infinitely more acceptable in the sight of God than is the self-sufficient, haughty spirit of those who see no cause to lament, who scorn the humility of Christ, and who claim perfection while transgressing God’s holy law. Meekness and lowliness of heart are the conditions for strength and victory. The crown of glory awaits those who bow at the foot of the cross. Blessed are these mourners, for they shall be comforted. 5T 474.4

The faithful, praying ones are, as it were, shut in with God. They themselves know not how securely they are shielded. Urged on by Satan, the rulers of this world are seeking to destroy them; but could their eyes be opened, as were the eyes of Elisha’s servant at Dothan, they would see the angels of God encamped about them, by their brightness and glory holding in check the hosts of darkness. 5T 475.1

As the people of God afflict their souls before Him, pleading for purity of heart, the command is given, “Take away the filthy garments” from them, and the encouraging words are spoken, “Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.” The spotless robe of Christ’s righteousness is placed upon the tried, tempted, yet faithful children of God. The despised remnant are clothed in glorious apparel, nevermore to be defiled by the corruptions of the world. Their names are retained in the Lamb’s book of life, enrolled among the faithful of all ages. 5T 475.2 (partial)

El sábado por la tarde, enfermó uno de nuestros miembros, y solicitó oraciones para recobrar la salud. Todos nos unimos en súplica al Médico que nunca perdió un caso, y mientras el poder curativo bajaba a sanar al enfermo el Espíritu descendió sobre mí y fuí arrebatada en visión. Vi cuatro ángeles que habían de hacer una labor en la tierra y andaban en vías de realizarla. Jesús vestía ropas sacerdotales. Miró compasivamente al pueblo remanente, y alzando las manos exclamó con voz de profunda compasión: “¡Mi sangre, Padre, mi sangre, mi sangre, mi sangre!” Entonces vi que de Dios, sentado en el gran trono blanco, salía una luz en extremo refulgente que derramaba sus rayos en derredor de Jesús. Pregunté a mi ángel acompañante qué significaba lo que oía y qué iban a hacer los cuatro ángeles. Me respondió que Dios era quien refrenaba las potestades y que encargaba a sus ángeles de todo lo relativo a la tierra; que los cuatro ángeles tenían poder de Dios para retener los cuatro vientos, y que estaban ya a punto de soltarlos, pero mientras aflojaban las manos y cuando los cuatro vientos iban a soplar, los misericordiosos ojos de Jesús vieron al pueblo remanente todavía sin sellar, y alzando las manos hacia su Padre intercedió con él, recordándole que había derramado su sangre por ellos. En consecuencia se le mandó a otro ángel que fuera velozmente a decir a los cuatro que retuvieran los vientos hasta que los siervos de Dios fuesen sellados en la frente con el sello de Dios. Tendrá lugar la batalla del Armagedón, y ese día no debe encontrar a ninguno de nosotros durmiendo. Debiéramos estar completamente despiertos, como vírgenes prudentes que tenemos aceite en nuestras vasijas y en nuestra lámparas. El poder del Espíritu Santo debe estar sobre nosotros, y el Capitán de las huestes del Señor estará a la cabeza de los ángeles del cielo para dirigir la batalla. Solemnes eventos ocurrirán en el futuro. Sonará una trompeta tras otra; una copa tras otra serán volcadas en forma sucesiva sobre los habitantes de la tierra. Escenas de enorme interés están casi sobre nosotros, y estas cosas serán indicaciones seguras de la presencia de Aquel que ha dirigido en todo movimiento agresivo, que ha acompañado la marcha de su causa a través de todos los siglos, y que ha prometido bondadosamente estar en persona con su pueblo en todos sus conflictos hasta el fin del mundo. El defenderá su verdad. El hará que ésta triunfe. El está listo para suplir a sus fieles de motivos y poder de propósito, inspirándoles esperanza y valor en la creciente actividad cuando el tiempo esté muy cercano. 3MS 487.1

1. La misma obra hoy.-
Se presenta a Josué como suplicando al Ángel. ¿Estamos ocupados en la misma obra? ¿Ascienden a Dios nuestras súplicas con fe viviente? ¿Abrimos la puerta del corazón a Jesús y le cerramos a Satanás todo medio de entrada? ¿Obtenemos diariamente luz más clara y mayor fortaleza para que podamos mantenernos en la justicia de Cristo? ¿Estamos vaciando nuestro corazón de todo egoísmo, y lo limpiamos preparándolo para que reciba la lluvia tardía del cielo?
Ahora es el tiempo cuando debemos confesar y abandonar nuestros pecados para que puedan ser llevados de antemano al juicio para ser borrados (RH 19-11-1908).

Las filas raleadas serán llenadas por aquellos a quienes Cristo representó como viniendo a la undécima hora. Hay muchos con quienes el Espíritu de Dios está contendiendo. El tiempo de los juicios destructores de Dios es el tiempo de la misericordia para aquellos que [hasta el momento] no han tenido oportunidad de aprender qué es la verdad. El Señor los mira con ternura. Su corazón misericordioso se conmueve, su mano todavía se extiende para salvar, mientras la puerta se cierra para aquellos que no quisieron entrar. La iglesia remanente

La visión de Zacarías con referencia a Josué y el ángel se aplica con fuerza peculiar a la experiencia del pueblo de Dios durante la terminación del gran día de expiación. La iglesia remanente será puesta en grave prueba y angustia. Los que guardan los mandamientos de Dios y la fe de Jesús sentirán la ira del dragón y de su hueste. Satanás considera a los habitantes del mundo súbditos suyos; ha obtenido el dominio de las iglesias apóstatas; pero ahí está ese pequeño grupo que resiste su supremacía. Si él pudiese borrarlo de la tierra, su triunfo sería completo. Así como influyó en las naciones paganas para que destruyesen a Israel, pronto incitará a las potestades malignas de la tierra a destruir al pueblo de Dios. Todo lo que se requerirá será que se rinda obediencia a los edictos humanos en violación de la ley divina. Los que quieran ser fieles a Dios y al deber serán amenazados, denunciados y proscritos. Serán traicionados por “padres, y hermanos, y parientes, y amigos”. Lucas 21:16.CPI 641.1

Su única esperanza se cifra en la misericordia de Dios; su única defensa será la oración. Como Josué intercedía delante del ángel, la iglesia remanente, con corazón quebrantado y fe ferviente, suplicará perdón y liberación por medio de Jesús su Abogado. Sus miembros serán completamente conscientes del carácter pecaminoso de sus vidas, verán su debilidad e indignidad, y mientras se miren a sí mismos, estarán por desesperar. El tentador estará listo para acusarlos, como estaba listo para resistir a Josué. Señalará sus vestiduras sucias, su carácter deficiente. Presentará su debilidad e insensatez, su pecado de ingratitud, cuán poco semejantes a Cristo son, lo cual ha deshonrado a su Redentor. Se esforzará para espantar las almas con el pensamiento de que su caso es desesperado, de que nunca se podrá lavar la mancha de su contaminación. Esperará destruir de tal manera su fe que se entreguen a sus tentaciones, se desvíen de su fidelidad a Dios, y reciban la marca de la bestia.CPI 641.2

Satanás insiste delante de Dios en sus acusaciones contra ellos, declara que por sus pecados han perdido el derecho a la protección divina y reclama el derecho de destruirlos como transgresores. Los declara tan merecedores como él mismo de ser excluidos del favor de Dios. “¿Son éstos—dice—, los que han de tomar mi lugar en el cielo, y el lugar de los ángeles que se unieron conmigo? Mientras profesar obedecer la ley de Dios, ¿han guardado sus preceptos? ¿No han sido amadores de sí mismos más que de Dios? ¿No han puesto sus propios intereses antes que su servicio? ¿No han amado las cosas del mundo? Mira los pecados que han señalado su vida. Contempla su egoísmo, su malicia, su odio mutuo”.CPI 642.1

Los hijos de Dios han sido muy deficientes en muchos respectos. Satanás tiene un conocimiento exacto de los pecados que él los indujo a cometer, y los presenta de la manera más exagerada, declarando: “¿Me desterrará Dios a mí y a mis ángeles de su presencia, y, sin embargo, recompensará a aquellos que han sido culpables de los mismos pecados? Tú no puedes hacer esto, con justicia, oh Señor. Tu trono no subsistirá en rectitud y juicio. La justicia exige que se pronuncie sentencia contra ellos”.CPI 643.1

Pero aunque los seguidores de Cristo han pecado, no se han entregado al dominio del mal. Han puesto a un lado sus pecados, han buscado al Señor con humildad y contrición y el Abogado divino intercede en su favor. El que ha sido el más ultrajado por su ingratitud, el que conoce sus pecados y también su arrepentimiento, declara: “Jehová te reprenda, oh Satán! Yo di mi vida por estas almas. Están esculpidas en las palmas de mis manos”.CPI 643.2

Los asaltos de Satanás son vigorosos, sus engaños terribles; pero el ojo del Señor está sobre sus hijos. Su aflicción es grande, las llamas del horno parecen estar a punto de consumirlos; pero Jesús los sacará como oro probado en el fuego. Su índole terrenal debe ser eliminada, para que la imagen de Cristo pueda reflejarse perfectamente; deben vencer la incredulidad; han de desarrollar fe, esperanza y paciencia. 5TPI 449.1

Los hijos de Dios están suspirando y clamando por las abominaciones hechas en la tierra. Con lágrimas advierten a los impíos el peligro que corren al pisotear la ley divina, y con indecible tristeza se humillan delante del Señor a causa de sus propias transgresiones. Los impíos se burlan de su pesar, ridiculizan sus solemnes súplicas y se mofan de lo que llaman debilidad. Pero la angustia y la humillación de los hijos de Dios dan evidencia inequívoca de que están recobrando la fuerza y nobleza de carácter perdidas como consecuencia del pecado. Porque se están acercando más a Cristo y sus ojos están fijos en su perfecta pureza, disciernen tan claramente el carácter excesivamente pecaminoso del pecado. Su contrición y humillación propias son infinitamente más aceptables a la vista de Dios que el espíritu de suficiencia propia y altanero de aquellos que no ven causa para lamentarse, que desprecian la humildad de Cristo y se creen perfectos mientras pisotean la santa ley de Dios. La mansedumbre y humildad de corazón son las condiciones para tener fuerza y alcanzar la victoria. La corona de gloria aguarda a aquellos que se postran al pie de la cruz. Bienaventurados son los que lloran; porque serán consolados. 5TPI 449.2

Los fieles, que se encuentran orando, están, por así decirlo, encerrados con Dios. Ellos mismos no saben cuán seguramente están escudados. Incitados por Satanás, los gobernantes de este mundo procuran destruirlos; pero si pudiesen abrírseles los ojos, como se abrieron los del siervo de Eliseo en Dotán, verían a los ángeles de Dios acampados en derredor de ellos, manteniendo en jaque a la hueste de las tinieblas con su resplandor y gloria. 5TPI 449.3

Mientras los hijos de Dios afligen sus almas delante de él, suplicando pureza de corazón, se da la orden: “Quitadle esas vestiduras viles”, y se pronuncian las alentadoras palabras: “Mira que he quitado de ti tu pecado, y te he hecho vestir de ropas de gala” Zacarías 3:4. Se pone sobre los tentados, probados, pero fieles hijos de Dios, el manto sin mancha de la justicia de Cristo. El remanente despreciado queda vestido de gloriosos atavíos, que nunca han de ser ya contaminados por las corrupciones del mundo. While appearing to the children of men as a great physician who can heal all their maladies, he will bring disease and disaster, until populous cities are reduced to ruin and desolation. Even now he is at work. In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hailstorms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power. He sweeps away the ripening harvest, and famine and distress follow. He imparts to the air a deadly taint, and thousands perish by the pestilence. These visitations are to become more and more frequent and disastrous. Destruction will be upon both man and beast. “The earth mourneth and fadeth away,” “the haughty people … do languish. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.” Isaiah 24:4, 5. GC 589.3

And then the great deceiver will persuade men that those who serve God are causing these evils. The class that have provoked the displeasure of Heaven will charge all their troubles upon those whose obedience to God’s commandments is a perpetual reproof to transgressors. It will be declared that men are offending God by the violation of the Sunday sabbath; that this sin has brought calamities which will not cease until Sunday observance shall be strictly enforced; and that those who present the claims of the fourth commandment, thus destroying reverence for Sunday, are troublers of the people, preventing their restoration to divine favor and temporal prosperity. Thus the accusation urged of old against the servant of God will be repeated and upon grounds equally well established: “And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim.” 1 Kings 18:17, 18. As the wrath of the people shall be excited by false charges, they will pursue a course toward God’s ambassadors very similar to that which apostate Israel pursued toward Elijah. GC 590.1

The miracle-working power manifested through spiritualism will exert its influence against those who choose to obey God rather than men. Communications from the spirits will declare that God has sent them to convince the rejecters of Sunday of their error, affirming that the laws of the land should be obeyed as the law of God. They will lament the great wickedness in the world and second the testimony of religious teachers that the degraded state of morals is caused by the desecration of Sunday. Great will be the indignation excited against all who refuse to accept their testimony. The Great Controversy, GC 590.2

Al par que se hace pasar ante los hijos de los hombres como un gran médico que puede curar todas sus enfermedades, Satanás producirá enfermedades y desastres al punto que ciudades populosas sean reducidas a ruinas y desolación. Ahora mismo está obrando. Y luego el gran engañador persuadirá a los hombres de que son los que sirven a Dios los que causan esos males. I feel the most intense anguish for our youth. I warn you, as one who knows the danger, not to be entrapped by Satan through the little knowledge of science which you may have acquired. It is better to have a pure and humble heart than all the knowledge you can possibly gain without the fear of the Lord. MYP 85.1

The youth of today will be likely to meet skeptics and infidels wherever they may go, and how necessary that they be equipped, so that they may be able to give a reason of their hope with meekness and fear. Thomas Paine has passed into his grave, but his works live to curse the world, and those who doubt the truth of God’s Word will place these infidel productions in the hands of the young and inexperienced, to fill their hearts with the poisonous atmosphere of doubt. The spirit of Satan works through wicked men to carry on his schemes for the ruin of souls. MYP 85.2

Page 89: Thomas Paine.—The writings of Thomas Paine were well known and widely read in the United States in the 1840’s. His book Age of Reason was a deistic work and detrimental to Christian faith and practice. The book began with the words “I believe in one God and no more.” Paine had no faith in Christ, and he was used successfully by Satan in his attacks upon the church. As Mrs. White indicated, if such a man as Paine could find entrance to heaven and be highly honored there, any sinner, without a reformation of life and without faith in Jesus Christ, could find admittance. She exposed this fallacy in vigorous language and pointed out the irrationality of spiritualism. EW 301.2

4. Spirit Manifestations. [See Appendix.] On page 43 read as follows: “I saw that the mysterious knocking in New York and other places was the power of Satan, and that such things would be more and more common, clothed in a religious garb so as to lull the deceived to greater security and to draw the minds of God’s people, if possible, to those things and cause them to doubt the teaching and power of the Holy Ghost.” This view was given in 1849, nearly five years since. Then spirit manifestations were mostly confined to the city of Rochester, known as the “Rochester knockings.” Since that time the heresy has spread beyond the expectations of anyone. EW 86.3

Much of the view on page 59, headed “Mysterious Rapping” given August 1850, has since been fulfilled, and is now fulfilling. Here is a portion of it: “I saw that soon it would be considered blasphemy to speak against the rapping, and that it would spread more and more, that Satan’s power would increase, and some of his devoted followers would have power to work miracles, and even to bring down fire from heaven in the sight of men. I was shown that by the rapping and mesmerism these modern magicians would yet account for all the miracles wrought by our Lord Jesus Christ, and that many would believe that all the mighty works of the Son of God when on earth were accomplished by this same power.” EW 86.4

I saw the rapping delusion—what progress it was making, and that if it were possible it would deceive the very elect. Satan will have power to bring before us the appearance of forms purporting to be our relatives or friends now sleeping in Jesus. It will be made to appear as if these friends were present; the words that they uttered while here, with which we were familiar, will be spoken, and the same tone of voice that they had while living will fall upon the ear. All this is to deceive the saints and ensnare them into the belief of this delusion. EW 87.1

I saw that the saints must get a thorough understanding of present truth, which they will be obliged to maintain from the Scriptures. They must understand the state of the dead; for the spirits of devils will yet appear to them, professing to be beloved friends and relatives, who will declare to them that the Sabbath has been changed, also other unscriptural doctrines. They will do all in their power to excite sympathy and will work miracles before them to confirm what they declare. The people of God must be prepared to withstand these spirits with the Bible truth that the dead know not anything, and that they who appear to them are the spirits of devils. Our minds must not be taken up with things around us, but must be occupied with the present truth and a preparation to give a reason of our hope with meekness and fear. We must seek wisdom from on high that we may stand in this day of error and delusion. EW 87.2

They are given over to strong delusions, to believe a lie, that they may be damned. This agent, the next highest in order to him, is the engineer, and other of his agents are employed in different offices as he may need them, and they are all going with lightning speed to perdition.” EW 88.2

I asked the angel if there were none left. He bade me look in an opposite direction, and I saw a little company traveling a narrow pathway. All seemed to be firmly united, bound together by the truth, in bundles, or companies. Hammond,” entitled Pilgrimage of Thomas Paine in the Spirit World, In which Paine is represented as an exalted spirit in the Seventh Sphere. And in the “Investigating Class in New York,” it was said that Christ himself had conversed with a medium and revealed that he was in the Sixth Sphere. The disparity will be understood when it is remembered that they represent the spirits as progressing in the spirit world, and that Christ, after more than 1800 years of progress, has reached the sixth sphere, while Paine, in about 100 years, has reached the seventh! A further explanation of this may be found in the statement of Doctor Hare, that his spirit sister said her progress had been retarded by her belief in the atonement of Christ. Thus does spiritualism exalt infidels and infidelity. See also Appendix.] EW 89.1

That holy Book cuts directly across his track and thwarts his plans; therefore he leads them to doubt its divine origin. Then he sets up the infidel, Thomas Paine, as if he were ushered into heaven when he died, and now, united with the holy apostles whom he hated on earth, were engaged in teaching the world. EW 90.1

The fact that Satan claims that one whom he loved so well, and who hated God so perfectly, is now with the holy apostles and angels in glory, should be enough to remove the veil from all minds and discover to them the dark, mysterious works of Satan. He virtually says to the world and to infidels, No matter how wicked you are, no matter whether you believe or disbelieve in God or the Bible, live as you please, heaven is your home; for all know that if Thomas Paine is in heaven, and so exalted, they will surely get there. This error is so glaring that all may see if they will. Satan is now doing through persons like Thomas Paine what he has been trying to do since his fall. He is, through his power and lying wonders, tearing away the foundation of the Christian’s hope and putting out the sun that is to light them in the narrow way to heaven. He is making the world believe that the Bible is uninspired, no better than a storybook, while he holds out something to take its place; namely, spiritual manifestations! EW 91.1

Here is a channel wholly devoted to himself and under his control, and he can make the world believe what he will. The Book that is to judge him and his followers he puts back in the shade, just where he wants it. The Saviour of the world he makes to be no more than a common man; and as the Roman guard that watched the tomb of Jesus spread the lying report that the chief priests and elders put into their mouths, so will the poor, deluded followers of these pretended spiritual manifestations repeat and try to make it appear that there is nothing miraculous about our Saviour’s birth, death, and resurrection. After putting Jesus in the background, they attract the attention of the world to themselves and to their miracles and lying wonders, which, they declare, far exceed the works of Christ. Thus the world is taken in the snare and lulled into a feeling of security, not to find out their awful deception until the seven last plagues are poured out. Satan laughs as he sees his plan succeed so well and the whole world taken in the snare. EW 91.2

Este agente, el que le sigue en orden, es el maquinista, y otros de sus agentes están empleados en diferentes cargos según los necesite, y todos se dirigen hacia la perdición con la rapidez del rayo.” PE 88.2

Pregunté al ángel si no quedaba nadie. Me invitó a mirar en la dirección opuesta, y vi una compañía pequeña que viajaba por una senda angosta. Todos parecían estar firmemente unidos, vinculados por la verdad, en agrupaciones o compañías. Dijo el ángel: “El tercer ángel está atándolos o sellándolos en gavillas para el granero celestial.” Esa pequeña compañía parecía agobiada, como si hubiese pasado por severas pruebas y conflictos. Parecía como que el sol acabara de salir detrás de una nube y resplandecía sobre sus rostros, dándoles aspecto triunfante, como si sus victorias estuviesen casi ganadas. PE 88.3

Vi que el Señor había dado al mundo oportunidad de descubrir el lazo. Este hecho sería evidencia suficiente para el cristiano, si no hubiese otra: que no se establece diferencia entre lo precioso y lo vil. Tomás Paine, cuyo cuerpo se ha reducido a polvo y quien ha de ser llamado al fin de los mil años, cuando se produzca la segunda resurrección, para que reciba su recompensa y sufra la segunda muerte, es representado por Satanás como si estuviera en el cielo, en posición muy exaltada. Satanás lo usó en la tierra mientras pudo, y ahora continúa haciéndolo al sostener que Paine es ensalzado y honrado en el cielo. Y lo que enseñó aquí en la tierra, Satanás sostiene que lo está enseñando ahora en el cielo. Hay quienes consideraron con horror la vida y la muerte de este hombre, así como sus enseñanzas corruptas, pero se someten ahora a ser enseñados por él, aunque fué uno de los hombres más viles y más corruptos, uno que despreció a Dios y su ley.1Véase el Apéndice. PE 89.1

El que es padre de mentira, ciega y engaña al mundo enviando a sus ángeles para que hablen en nombre de los apóstoles, y los hace aparecer como contradiciendo lo que ellos mismos escribieron bajo el dictado del Espíritu Santo cuando estaban en la tierra. Estos ángeles mentirosos ponen en boca de los apóstoles una corrupción de sus propias enseñanzas y declaran que éstas son adulteradas. Al obrar así, Satanás se deleita en sumir en la incertidumbre, acerca de la Palabra de Dios, a los que profesan ser cristianos y a todo el mundo. El Libro Santo se atraviesa en su camino y estorba sus planes. Por lo tanto, induce a los hombres a dudar de su origen divino. Luego eleva en un pedestal al incrédulo Tomás Paine, como si hubiese entrado en el cielo cuando murió, y ahora se dedicara a enseñar al mundo, unido con los santos apóstoles a quienes odió en la tierra. PE 90.1

Satanás asigna a cada uno de sus ángeles el papel que ha de desempeñar. Les ordena a todos que sean astutos y arteros. Instruye a algunos para que representen el papel de los apóstoles y hablen en nombre de ellos, mientras que otros deben desempeñar la parte de incrédulos y hombres impíos que murieron maldiciendo a Dios, pero ahora parecen ser muy religiosos. No se establece diferencia entre los apóstoles más santos y el incrédulo más vil. A ambos se les hace enseñar la misma cosa. A Satanás no le importa a quién hace hablar, con tal que logre su objeto. El estuvo tan estrechamente relacionado con Paine en esta tierra, y le ayudó de tal manera en su obra, que le resulta fácil saber qué palabras empleaba Paine y reproducir la letra del que le sirvió tan fielmente y logró con tanto éxito sus propósitos. Satanás dictó muchos de sus escritos, y le es fácil dictar sentimientos por medio de sus ángeles ahora y hacer aparecer como que provienen de Tomás Paine, quien, mientras vivía, era un siervo devoto del maligno. Esta es la obra maestra de Satanás. Toda esta enseñanza, que se da como proveniente de los apóstoles, de los santos y de hombres impíos que murieron, procede directamente de su majestad satánica. PE 90.2

El hecho de que Satanás asevere que uno a quien él amaba tanto, y que odiaba tan cabalmente a Dios, está ahora con los santos apóstoles y los ángeles gloriosos, debe bastar para quitar todo velo que cubra las inteligencias y descubrir ante ellas las obras sombrías y misteriosas de Satanás. El dice virtualmente al mundo y a los incrédulos: “No importa cuán impíos seáis, no importa que creáis o no creáis en Dios ó en la Biblia, vivid como queráis, el cielo es vuestra patria.” Porque todos saben que si Tomás Paine está en el cielo, y muy ensalzado, ellos mismos no podrán menos de llegar allí. Este error es tan patente que todos pueden verlo si quieren. Satanás está haciendo ahora, mediante personas como Tomás Paine, lo que ha estado tratando de hacer desde su caída. Está, por medio de su poder y sus prodigios mentirosos, destruyendo el fundamento de la esperanza cristiana, y apagando el sol que ha de alumbrarlos en el camino angosto que lleva al cielo. Está haciendo creer al mundo que la Biblia no es inspirada, ni mejor que un libro de cuentos, mientras ofrece algo que la ha de reemplazar, a saber, las manifestaciones espirituales. PE 91.1

Es un canal totalmente dedicado a él y bajo su control, y puede hacer creer al mundo lo que quiera. Al Libro que ha de juzgarle a él y a sus seguidores, lo pone en la sombra, exactamente donde quiere que esté. Al Salvador del mundo lo reduce a la condición de hombre común; y como la guardia romana que vigiló la tumba de Jesús difundió la mentira que los príncipes de los sacerdotes y ancianos pusieron en su boca, así también los pobres y engañados seguidores de estas así llamadas manifestaciones espirituales repiten que nada hubo de milagroso en el nacimiento, la muerte y la resurrección de nuestro Salvador, y tratan de hacer aparecer que dicen la verdad. Después de relegar a Jesús a una posición inferior, atraen la atención del mundo sobre sí mismos y sus milagros y prodigios mentirosos, que, declaran, superan por lejos las obras de Cristo. De esta manera el mundo cae en el lazo y es adormecido por una sensación de seguridad, de tal manera que no descubrirá el engaño espantoso hasta que hayan sido derramadas las siete plagas. Satanás se ríe al ver el éxito de su plan, y cómo todo el mundo queda apresado en la trampa. PE 91.2

El espiritismo

Se me presentó el engaño de los golpes de los médiums espiritistas y vi que Satanás puede poner ante nosotros la apariencia de formas que simulen ser nuestros parientes o amigos que duermen en Jesús. Se hará aparentar como si estos deudos estuvieran presentes en realidad. Hablarán las palabras que pronunciaban mientras estaban aquí, con las cuales nos hemos familiarizado, y resonará en nuestro oído su mismo timbre de voz. Todo esto es para engañar al mundo y entramparlo en la creencia de este engaño. PE 262.1

Vi que los santos deben tener cabal comprensión de la verdad presente, que se verán obligados a sostener por las Escrituras. Deben comprender el estado en que se hallan los muertos, porque los espíritus diabólicos se les aparecerán aseverando ser queridos parientes o amigos que les declararán doctrinas contrarias a la Escritura. Harán cuanto puedan para excitar su simpatía y realizarán milagros ante ellos para confirmar sus declaraciones. El pueblo de Dios debe estar preparado para rechazar a estos espíritus con la verdad bíblica de que los muertos nada saben y que los aparecidos son espíritus de demonios. PE 262.2

Debemos examinar cuidadosamente el fundamento de nuestra esperanza, porque de las Escrituras hemos de entresacar la razón que hayamos de dar de ella. Este engaño espiritista se difundirá, y tendremos que luchar con él cara a cara, y si no estamos preparados para ello, quedaremos engañados y vencidos. Pero si por nuestra parte hacemos cuanto podamos a fin de prepararnos para afrontar el conflicto que se avecina, Dios hará su parte y nos protegerá con su brazo omnipotente. Enviará a todos los ángeles de la gloria para levantar una valla alrededor de las almas fieles, antes que consentir en que las engañen y extravíen los falaces prodigios de Satanás. PE 262.3

Vi la rapidez con que se difundía el engaño espiritista. Se me mostró un tren de vagones que marchaban con la velocidad del rayo. El ángel me mandó que observara cuidadosamente. Fijé la vista en el tren. Parecía que en él iba el mundo entero. Después el ángel me mostró al jefe del tren, un hermoso e imponente personaje a quien todos los pasajeros admiraban y reverenciaban. Quedé perpleja y le pregunté a mi ángel acompañante quién era aquel jefe. Me respondió: “Es Satanás, disfrazado de ángel de luz. Ha cautivado al mundo. Este ha sido entregado a formidables engaños para creer en una mentira a fin de que se condene. Su agente, el que le sigue en categoría, es el maquinista, y otros agentes suyos están empleados en diversos cargos, según los va necesitando, y todos marchan con relampagueante velocidad a la perdición.” PE 263.1

Le pregunté al ángel si no había quedado nadie sin subir en el tren, y él me mandó que mirase en dirección opuesta, donde vi una pequeña compañía que caminaba por un sendero angosto. Todos parecían firmemente unidos por la verdad. Aquella pequeña compañía daba muestras de fatiga, como si hubiese pasado por muchas pruebas y conflictos. Parecía como si el sol acabara de levantarse detrás de una nube y brillara sobre sus rostros, dándoles aire de triunfo, cual si estuvieran próximos a ganar la victoria. PE 263.2

Vi que el Señor ha dado al mundo ocasión de descubrir el engaño. Si no hubiese otra prueba, bastaría para el cristiano la de que los espiritistas no hacen distinción entre lo precioso y lo vil. Satanás representa como muy exaltado en el cielo a Tomás Paine, cuyo cuerpo está ya convertido en polvo y ha de ser llamado a despertar al fin de los mil años, cuando la segunda resurrección, para recibir su recompensa y sufrir la segunda muerte. Satanás se sirvió de Tomás Paine en la tierra tanto como pudo, y ahora prosigue la misma obra asegurando que está muy honrado y exaltado en el cielo. Y tal como enseñó Paine aquí, finge Satanás que continúa enseñando allí. Y algunos que solían considerar con horror su vida en la tierra, su muerte y sus corruptoras enseñanzas, se someten ahora a ser enseñados por él, que fué uno de los hombres más viles y corrompidos, alguien que despreció a Dios y su ley. PE 263.3

El padre de la mentira ciega y engaña al mundo enviando a sus ángeles para que hablen como si fueran los apóstoles, y esos ángeles hacen que éstos contradigan lo que escribieron en la tierra por inspiración del Espíritu Santo. Los ángeles mentirosos hacen aparecer a los apóstoles corrompiendo sus propias enseñanzas y declarándolas adulteradas. De este modo se complace Satanás en sumir a los que se llaman cristianos, y a toda clase de gente, en incertidumbre respecto a la Palabra de Dios. Ese Santo Libro se interpone directamente en su camino para desbaratar sus planes; por lo tanto, él induce a los hombres a que duden del origen divino de la Biblia. Luego ensalza al incrédulo Tomás Paine, como si al morir hubiera entrado en el cielo y, unido ahora con los santos apóstoles a quienes odió en la tierra, se dedicara a enseñar al mundo. PE 264.1

Satanás señala a cada uno de sus ángeles el papel que han de representar. Les encarga a todos que sean arteros y astutos maquinadores. A unos les manda que desempeñen el papel de apóstoles y hablen por ellos, mientras que a otros les asigna la función de incrédulos e impíos que murieron maldiciendo a Dios, pero que ahora parecen muy religiosos. No hace distinción entre los más santos apóstoles y los más viles incrédulos. A todos los presenta como enseñando lo mismo. No le importa a Satanás a quién haga hablar, con tal de lograr su objeto. Estuvo íntimamente relacionado con Paine en la tierra, ayudándole en su obra, y por lo tanto, le es muy fácil conocer las palabras y la misma escritura de quien le sirvió tan fielmente y tan bien cumplió su propósito. Satanás dictó mucho de lo escrito por Paine, y así le es cosa fácil expresar ahora, por medio de sus ángeles, sentimientos que parezcan provenir de Paine. Esta es la obra maestra de Satanás. Todas las enseñanzas que se dan como provenientes de los apóstoles, de los santos y de los impíos ya muertos, proceden en realidad directamente de su majestad satánica. PE 264.2

El hecho de que Satanás asevere que un ser a quien él tanto amó y que tan cumplidamente odió a Dios esté ahora en la gloria con los santos apóstoles y con los ángeles, debiera bastar para descorrer el velo de todas las mentes y revelarles las misteriosas y negras obras de Satanás, quien en suma dice al mundo y a los incrédulos: “Por impíamente que viváis, sea que creáis o dejéis de creer en Dios y en la Biblia, obrad como os plazca, el cielo es vuestra morada, pues todos saben que si Tomás Paine está tan exaltado en el cielo, todos entrarán seguramente allí.” Esto es tan notorio que todos pueden verlo si quieren. Satanás está ahora haciendo, por medio de personas como Tomás Paine, lo que siempre trató de hacer desde su caída. Por medio de su poder y de sus prodigios mentirosos, está socavando los fundamentos de la esperanza cristiana y eclipsando el sol que ha de iluminar el angosto sendero que conduce al cielo. Está haciendo creer al mundo que la Biblia no es inspirada ni mejor que un libro de cuentos, mientras que trata de suplantarla con las manifestaciones espiritistas. PE 265.1

Estas son una agencia enteramente suya, sujeta a su gobierno, y puede hacer creer al mundo cuanto le plazca. Coloca en la sombra, que es donde le conviene colocarlo, el libro que ha de juzgarlo a él y a sus secuaces. Dice que el Salvador del mundo fué un hombre como otro cualquiera; y así como los guardias romanos que custodiaban el sepulcro de Jesús propalaron el mentiroso informe que los ancianos y los príncipes de los sacerdotes pusieron en sus bocas, los pobres e ilusos adeptos a las pretendidas manifestaciones* espiritistas, repetirán y tratarán de dar a entender que nada hubo de milagroso en el nacimiento de nuestro Salvador ni en su muerte y resurrección. Después de relegar a Jesús a último término, llamarán la atención de la gente hacia sí mismos, sus milagros y prodigios mentirosos, que según ellos dicen, superan a las obras de Cristo. Así cae la gente en el lazo, adormeciéndose en un sentimiento de seguridad que no le permitirá advertir su horrible engaño antes que se derramen las siete últimas plagas. Satanás se ríe al ver cuán bien le va saliendo su plan, y que el mundo entero va cayendo en sus redes. PE 265.2
