Los cuernos como de cordero y la voz de drag\u00f3n del s\u00edmbolo indican una extra\u00f1a contradicci\u00f3n entre lo que profesa ser y lo que pr\u00e1ctica la naci\u00f3n as\u00ed representada. El \u201chablar\u201d de la naci\u00f3n son los actos de sus autoridades legislativas y judiciales. Por esos actos la naci\u00f3n desmentir\u00e1 los principios liberales y pac\u00edficos que expres\u00f3 como fundamento de su pol\u00edtica. La predicci\u00f3n de que hablar\u00e1 \u201ccomo drag\u00f3n\u201d y ejercer\u00e1 \u201ctoda la autoridad de la primera bestia\u201d, anuncia claramente el desarrollo del esp\u00edritu de intolerancia y persecuci\u00f3n de que tantas pruebas dieran las naciones representadas por el drag\u00f3n y la bestia semejante al leopardo. Y la declaraci\u00f3n de que la bestia con dos cuernos \u201chace que la tierra y los que en ella habitan, adoren a la bestia primera\u201d, indica que la autoridad de esta naci\u00f3n ser\u00e1 empleada para imponer alguna observancia en homenaje al papado. CS 437.1<\/p>\n

Semejante actitud ser\u00eda abiertamente contraria a los principios de este gobierno, al genio de sus instituciones libres, a los claros y solemnes reconocimientos contenidos en la declaraci\u00f3n de la independencia, y contrarios finalmente a la constituci\u00f3n. Los fundadores de la naci\u00f3n procuraron con acierto que la iglesia no pudiera hacer uso del poder civil, con los consabidos e inevitables resultados: la intolerancia y la persecuci\u00f3n. La constituci\u00f3n garantiza que \u201cel congreso no legislar\u00e1 con respecto al establecimiento de una religi\u00f3n ni prohibir\u00e1 el libre ejercicio de ella\u201d, y que \u201cninguna manifestaci\u00f3n religiosa ser\u00e1 jam\u00e1s requerida como condici\u00f3n de aptitud para ninguna funci\u00f3n o cargo p\u00fablico en los Estados Unidos\u201d. Solo en flagrante violaci\u00f3n de estas garant\u00edas de la libertad de la naci\u00f3n, es como se puede imponer por la autoridad civil la observancia de cualquier deber religioso. Pero la inconsecuencia de tal procedimiento no es mayor que lo representado por el s\u00edmbolo. Es la bestia con cuernos semejantes a los de un cordero\u2014que profesa ser pura, mansa, inofensiva\u2014y que habla como un drag\u00f3n. CS 437.2<\/p>\n

\u201cDiciendo a los que habitan sobre la tierra, que hagan una imagen de la bestia\u201d. Aqu\u00ed tenemos presentada a las claras una forma de gobierno en el cual el poder legislativo descansa en el pueblo, y ello prueba que los Estados Unidos de Norteam\u00e9rica constituyen la naci\u00f3n se\u00f1alada por la profec\u00eda. CS 437.3<\/p>\n

\u00bfPero qu\u00e9 es la \u201cimagen de la bestia\u201d? \u00bfY c\u00f3mo se formar\u00e1? La imagen es hecha por la bestia de dos cuernos y es una imagen de la primera bestia. As\u00ed que para saber a qu\u00e9 se asemeja la imagen y c\u00f3mo ser\u00e1 formada, debemos estudiar los rasgos caracter\u00edsticos de la misma bestia: el papado. CS 437.4<\/p>\n

Cuando la iglesia primitiva se corrompi\u00f3 al apartarse de la sencillez del evangelio y al aceptar costumbres y ritos paganos, perdi\u00f3 el Esp\u00edritu y el poder de Dios; y para dominar las conciencias busc\u00f3 el apoyo del poder civil. El resultado fue el papado, es decir, una iglesia que dominaba el poder del estado y se serv\u00eda de \u00e9l para promover sus propios fines y especialmente para extirpar la \u201cherej\u00eda\u201d. Para que los Estados Unidos formen una imagen de la bestia, el poder religioso debe dominar de tal manera al gobierno civil que la autoridad del estado sea empleada tambi\u00e9n por la iglesia para cumplir sus fines. CS 438.1<\/p>\n

Siempre que la iglesia alcanz\u00f3 el poder civil, lo emple\u00f3 para castigar a los que no admit\u00edan todas sus doctrinas. Las iglesias protestantes que siguieron las huellas de Roma al aliarse con los poderes mundanos, manifestaron el mismo deseo de restringir la libertad de conciencia. Ejemplo de esto lo tenemos en la larga persecuci\u00f3n de los disidentes por la iglesia de Inglaterra. Durante los siglos XVI y XVII miles de ministros no conformistas fueron obligados a abandonar sus iglesias, y a muchos pastores y feligreses se les impusieron multas, encarcelamientos, torturas y el martirio. CS 438.2<\/p>\n

Fue la apostas\u00eda lo que indujo a la iglesia primitiva a buscar la ayuda del gobierno civil, y esto prepar\u00f3 el camino para el desarrollo del papado, simbolizado por la bestia. San Pablo lo predijo al anunciar que vendr\u00eda \u201cla apostas\u00eda\u201d, y ser\u00eda \u201crevelado el hombre de pecado\u201d. 2 Tesalonicenses 2:3 (VM). \nCuando las iglesias principales de los Estados Unidos, uni\u00e9ndose en puntos comunes de doctrina, influyan sobre el estado para que imponga los decretos y las instituciones de ellas, entonces la Am\u00e9rica protestante habr\u00e1 formado una imagen de la jerarqu\u00eda romana, y la inflicci\u00f3n de penas civiles contra los disidentes vendr\u00e1 de por s\u00ed sola. The lamblike horns and dragon voice of the symbol point to a striking contradiction between the professions and the practice of the nation thus represented. The \u201cspeaking\u201d of the nation is the action of its legislative and judicial authorities. By such action it will give the lie to those liberal and peaceful principles which it has put forth as the foundation of its policy. The prediction that it will speak \u201cas a dragon\u201d and exercise \u201call the power of the first beast\u201d plainly foretells a development of the spirit of intolerance and persecution that was manifested by the nations represented by the dragon and the leopardlike beast. And the statement that the beast with two horns \u201ccauseth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast\u201d indicates that the authority of this nation is to be exercised in enforcing some observance which shall be an act of homage to the papacy. GC 442.1<\/p>\n

Such action would be directly contrary to the principles of this government, to the genius of its free institutions, to the direct and solemn avowals of the Declaration of Independence, and to the Constitution. The founders of the nation wisely sought to guard against the employment of secular power on the part of the church, with its inevitable result\u2014intolerance and persecution. The Constitution provides that \u201cCongress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,\u201d and that \u201cno religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.\u201d Only in flagrant violation of these safeguards to the nation’s liberty, can any religious observance be enforced by civil authority. But the inconsistency of such action is no greater than is represented in the symbol. It is the beast with lamblike horns\u2014in profession pure, gentle, and harmless\u2014that speaks as a dragon. GC 442.2<\/p>\n

\u201cSaying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast.\u201d Here is clearly presented a form of government in which the legislative power rests with the people, a most striking evidence that the United States is the nation denoted in the prophecy. GC 442.3<\/p>\n

But what is the \u201cimage to the beast\u201d? and how is it to be formed? The image is made by the two-horned beast, and is an image to the beast. It is also called an image of the beast. Then to learn what the image is like and how it is to be formed we must study the characteristics of the beast itself\u2014the papacy. GC 443.1<\/p>\n

When the early church became corrupted by departing from the simplicity of the gospel and accepting heathen rites and customs, she lost the Spirit and power of God; and in order to control the consciences of the people, she sought the support of the secular power. The result was the papacy, a church that controlled the power of the state and employed it to further her own ends, especially for the punishment of \u201cheresy.\u201d In order for the United States to form an image of the beast, the religious power must so control the civil government that the authority of the state will also be employed by the church to accomplish her own ends. GC 443.2<\/p>\n

Whenever the church has obtained secular power, she has employed it to punish dissent from her doctrines. Protestant churches that have followed in the steps of Rome by forming alliance with worldly powers have manifested a similar desire to restrict liberty of conscience. An example of this is given in the long-continued persecution of dissenters by the Church of England. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, thousands of nonconformist ministers were forced to flee from their churches, and many, both of pastors and people, were subjected to fine, imprisonment, torture, and martyrdom. GC 443.3<\/p>\n

It was apostasy that led the early church to seek the aid of the civil government, and this prepared the way for the development of the papacy\u2014the beast. Said Paul: \u201cThere\u201d shall \u201ccome a falling away, … and that man of sin be revealed.\u201d 2 Thessalonians 2:3. So apostasy in the church will prepare the way for the image to the beast. GC 443.4

\nWhen the leading churches of the United States, uniting upon such points of doctrine as are held by them in common, shall influence the state to enforce their decrees and to sustain their institutions, then Protestant America will have formed an image of the Roman hierarchy, and the infliction of civil penalties upon dissenters will inevitably result. GC 445.1<\/p>\n

\n2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
\n3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
\n4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
\n5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.<\/p>\n
