There is no necessity for thinking that we cannot endure persecution; we shall have to go through terrible times.15The Review and Herald, April 29, 1890. Mar 194.2<\/p>\n
The persecutions of Protestants by Romanism, by which the religion of Jesus Christ was almost annihilated, will be more than rivaled when Protestantism and popery are combined.16Manuscript 30, 1889. Mar 194.3<\/p>\n
The commandment-keeping people of God erelong will be placed in a most trying position; but all those who have walked in the light, and diffused the light, will realize that God interposes in their behalf. When everything looks most forbidding, then the Lord will reveal His power to His faithful ones. When the nation for which God has worked in such a marvelous manner, and over which He has spread the shield of Omnipotence, abandons Protestant principles, and through its legislature gives countenance and support to Romanism in limiting religious liberty, then God will work in His own power for His people that are true. The tyranny of Rome will be exercised, but Christ is our refuge.17Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 206. Mar 194.4<\/p>\n
When the leading churches of the United States, uniting upon such points of doctrine as are held by them in common, shall influence the state to enforce their decrees and to sustain their institutions, then Protestant America will have formed an image of the Roman hierarchy, and the infliction of civil penalties upon dissenters will inevitably result.18The Great Controversy, 445. Mar 194.5<\/p>\n
The Scriptures teach that popery is to regain its lost supremacy, and that the fires of persecution will be rekindled through the time-serving concessions of the so-called Protestant world. In this time of peril we can stand only as we have the truth and the power of God…. The prospect of being brought into personal danger and distress, need not cause despondency, but should quicken the vigor and hopes of God’s people; for the time of their peril is the season for God to grant them clearer manifestations of his power.19Selected Messages 2:367-370. Mar 194.6

\nThrough spiritualism, Satan appears as a benefactor of the race, healing the diseases of the people, and professing to present a new and more exalted system of religious faith; but at the same time he works as a destroyer. His temptations are leading multitudes to ruin. Intemperance dethrones reason; sensual indulgence, strife, and bloodshed follow. Satan delights in war, for it excites the worst passions of the soul and then sweeps into eternity its victims steeped in vice and blood. It is his object to incite the nations to war against one another, for he can thus divert the minds of the people from the work of preparation to stand in the day of God. GC 589.1<\/p>\n
Satan works through the elements also to garner his harvest of unprepared souls. He has studied the secrets of the laboratories of nature, and he uses all his power to control the elements as far as God allows. When he was suffered to afflict Job, how quickly flocks and herds, servants, houses, children, were swept away, one trouble succeeding another as in a moment. It is God that shields His creatures and hedges them in from the power of the destroyer. But the Christian world have shown contempt for the law of Jehovah; and the Lord will do just what He has declared that He would\u2014He will withdraw His blessings from the earth and remove His protecting care from those who are rebelling against His law and teaching and forcing others to do the same. Satan has control of all whom God does not especially guard. He will favor and prosper some in order to further his own designs, and he will bring trouble upon others and lead men to believe that it is God who is afflicting them. GC 589.2<\/p>\n
While appearing to the children of men as a great physician who can heal all their maladies, he will bring disease and disaster, until populous cities are reduced to ruin and desolation. Even now he is at work. In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hailstorms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power. He sweeps away the ripening harvest, and famine and distress follow. He imparts to the air a deadly taint, and thousands perish by the pestilence. These visitations are to become more and more frequent and disastrous. Destruction will be upon both man and beast. \u201cThe earth mourneth and fadeth away,\u201d \u201cthe haughty people … do languish. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.\u201d Isaiah 24:4, 5. GC 589.3<\/p>\n
And then the great deceiver will persuade men that those who serve God are causing these evils. The class that have provoked the displeasure of Heaven will charge all their troubles upon those whose obedience to God’s commandments is a perpetual reproof to transgressors. It will be declared that men are offending God by the violation of the Sunday sabbath; that this sin has brought calamities which will not cease until Sunday observance shall be strictly enforced; and that those who present the claims of the fourth commandment, thus destroying reverence for Sunday, are troublers of the people, preventing their restoration to divine favor and temporal prosperity. Thus the accusation urged of old against the servant of God will be repeated and upon grounds equally well established: \u201cAnd it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel? And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim.\u201d 1 Kings 18:17, 18. As the wrath of the people shall be excited by false charges, they will pursue a course toward God’s ambassadors very similar to that which apostate Israel pursued toward Elijah. GC 590.1<\/p>\n
The miracle-working power manifested through spiritualism will exert its influence against those who choose to obey God rather than men. Communications from the spirits will declare that God has sent them to convince the rejecters of Sunday of their error, affirming that the laws of the land should be obeyed as the law of God. They will lament the great wickedness in the world and second the testimony of religious teachers that the degraded state of morals is caused by the desecration of Sunday. Great will be the indignation excited against all who refuse to accept their testimony. GC 590.2<\/p>\n
Satan’s policy in this final conflict with God’s people is the same that he employed in the opening of the great controversy in heaven. He professed to be seeking to promote the stability of the divine government, while secretly bending every effort to secure its overthrow. And the very work which he was thus endeavoring to accomplish he charged upon the loyal angels. The same policy of deception has marked the history of the Roman Church. It has professed to act as the vicegerent of Heaven, while seeking to exalt itself above God and to change His law. Under the rule of Rome, those who suffered death for their fidelity to the gospel were denounced as evildoers; they were declared to be in league with Satan; and every possible means was employed to cover them with reproach, to cause them to appear in the eyes of the people and even to themselves as the vilest of criminals. So it will be now. While Satan seeks to destroy those who honor God’s law, he will cause them to be accused as lawbreakers, as men who are dishonoring God and bringing judgments upon the world. GC 591.1
\nGod never forces the will or the conscience; but Satan’s constant resort\u2014to gain control of those whom he cannot otherwise seduce\u2014is compulsion by cruelty. Through fear or force he endeavors to rule the conscience and to secure homage to himself. To accomplish this, he works through both religious and secular authorities, moving them to the enforcement of human laws in defiance of the law of God. GC 591.2<\/p>\n
Those who honor the Bible Sabbath will be denounced as enemies of law and order, as breaking down the moral restraints of society, causing anarchy and corruption, and calling down the judgments of God upon the earth. Their conscientious scruples will be pronounced obstinacy, stubbornness, and contempt of authority. They will be accused of disaffection toward the government. Ministers who deny the obligation of the divine law will present from the pulpit the duty of yielding obedience to the civil authorities as ordained of God. In legislative halls and courts of justice, commandment keepers will be misrepresented and condemned. A false coloring will be given to their words; the worst construction will be put upon their motives. GC 592.1<\/p>\n
As the Protestant churches reject the clear, Scriptural arguments in defense of God’s law, they will long to silence those whose faith they cannot overthrow by the Bible. Though they blind their own eyes to the fact, they are now adopting a course which will lead to the persecution of those who conscientiously refuse to do what the rest of the Christian world are doing, and acknowledge the claims of the papal sabbath. GC 592.2<\/p>\n
The dignitaries of church and state will unite to bribe, persuade, or compel all classes to honor the Sunday. The lack of divine authority will be supplied by oppressive enactments. Political corruption is destroying love of justice and regard for truth; and even in free America, rulers and legislators, in order to secure public favor, will yield to the popular demand for a law enforcing Sunday observance. Liberty of conscience, which has cost so great a sacrifice, will no longer be respected. In the soon-coming conflict we shall see exemplified the prophet’s words: \u201cThe dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.\u201d Revelation 12:17. Las persecuciones que sufrieron los protestantes de parte del romanismo, y por las cuales la religi\u00f3n de Jesucristo casi lleg\u00f3 a ser aniquilada, ser\u00e1n sobrepasadas cuando se unan el protestantismo y el papado.17Manuscrito 30, 1889.<\/p>\n

\nEl espiritismo hace aparecer a Satan\u00e1s como benefactor de la raza humana, que sana las enfermedades del pueblo y profesa presentar un sistema religioso nuevo y m\u00e1s elevado; pero al mismo tiempo obra como destructor. Sus tentaciones arrastran a multitudes a la ruina. La intemperancia destrona la raz\u00f3n, los placeres sensuales, las disputas y los cr\u00edmenes la siguen. Satan\u00e1s se deleita en la guerra, que despierta las m\u00e1s viles pasiones del alma, y arroja luego a sus v\u00edctimas, sumidas en el vicio y en la sangre, a la eternidad. Su objeto consiste en hostigar a las naciones a hacerse mutuamente la guerra; pues de este modo puede distraer los esp\u00edritus de los hombres de la obra de preparaci\u00f3n necesaria para subsistir en el d\u00eda del Se\u00f1or. Satan\u00e1s obra asimismo por medio de los elementos para cosechar muchedumbres de almas a\u00fan no preparadas. Tiene estudiados los secretos de los laboratorios de la naturaleza y emplea todo su poder para dirigir los elementos en cuanto Dios se lo permita. Cuando se le dej\u00f3 que afligiera a Job, \u00a1cu\u00e1n prestamente fueron destruidos reba\u00f1os, ganado, sirvientes, casas e hijos, en una serie de desgracias, obra de un momento! Es Dios quien protege a sus criaturas y las guarda del poder del destructor. Pero el mundo cristiano ha manifestado su menosprecio de la ley de Jehov\u00e1, y el Se\u00f1or har\u00e1 exactamente lo que declar\u00f3 que har\u00eda: alejar\u00e1 sus bendiciones de la tierra y retirar\u00e1 su cuidado protector de sobre los que se rebelan contra su ley y que ense\u00f1an y obligan a los dem\u00e1s a hacer lo mismo. Satan\u00e1s ejerce dominio sobre todos aquellos a quienes Dios no guarda en forma especial. Favorecer\u00e1 y har\u00e1 prosperar a algunos para obtener sus fines, y atraer\u00e1 desgracias sobre otros, al mismo tiempo que har\u00e1 creer a los hombres que es Dios quien los aflige. Al par que se hace pasar ante los hijos de los hombres como un gran m\u00e9dico que puede curar todas sus enfermedades, Satan\u00e1s producir\u00e1 enfermedades y desastres al punto que ciudades populosas sean reducidas a ruinas y desolaci\u00f3n. Ahora mismo est\u00e1 obrando. Ejerce su poder en todos los lugares y bajo mil formas: en las desgracias y calamidades de mar y tierra, en las grandes conflagraciones, en los tremendos huracanes y en las terribles tempestades de granizo, en las inundaciones, en los ciclones, en las mareas extraordinarias y en los terremotos. Destruye las mieses casi maduras y a ello siguen la hambruna y la angustia; propaga por el aire emanaciones mef\u00edticas y miles de seres perecen en la pestilencia. Estas plagas ir\u00e1n menudeando m\u00e1s y m\u00e1s y se har\u00e1n m\u00e1s y m\u00e1s desastrosas. La destrucci\u00f3n caer\u00e1 sobre hombres y animales. \u201cLa tierra se pone de luto y se marchita\u201d, \u201cdesfallece la gente encumbrada de la tierra. La tierra tambi\u00e9n es profanada bajo sus habitantes; porque traspasaron la ley, cambiaron el estatuto, y quebrantaron el pacto eterno\u201d. Isa\u00edas 24:4, 5 (VM). CS 576.1<\/p>\n
Y luego el gran enga\u00f1ador persuadir\u00e1 a los hombres de que son los que sirven a Dios los que causan esos males. La parte de la humanidad que haya provocado el desagrado de Dios lo cargar\u00e1 a la cuenta de aquellos cuya obediencia a los mandamientos divinos es una reconvenci\u00f3n perpetua para los transgresores. Se declarar\u00e1 que los hombres ofenden a Dios al violar el descanso del domingo; que este pecado ha atra\u00eddo calamidades que no concluir\u00e1n hasta que la observancia del domingo no sea estrictamente obligatoria; y que los que proclaman la vigencia del cuarto mandamiento, haciendo con ello que se pierda el respeto debido al domingo y rechazando el favor divino, turban al pueblo y alejan la prosperidad temporal. Y as\u00ed se repetir\u00e1 la acusaci\u00f3n hecha antiguamente al siervo de Dios y por motivos de la misma \u00edndole: \u201cY sucedi\u00f3, luego que Acab vio a El\u00edas, que le dijo Acab: \u00bfEst\u00e1s t\u00fa aqu\u00ed, perturbador de Israel? A lo que respondi\u00f3: No he perturbado yo a Israel, sino t\u00fa y la casa de tu padre, por haber dejado los mandamientos de Jehov\u00e1, y haber seguido a los baales\u201d. 1 Reyes 18:17, 18 (VM). Cuando con falsos cargos se haya despertado la ira del pueblo, este seguir\u00e1 con los embajadores de Dios una conducta muy parecida a la que sigui\u00f3 el ap\u00f3stata Israel con El\u00edas. CS 576.2<\/p>\n
El poder milagroso que se manifiesta en el espiritismo ejercer\u00e1 su influencia en perjuicio de los que prefieren obedecer a Dios antes que a los hombres. Habr\u00e1 comunicaciones de esp\u00edritus que declarar\u00e1n que Dios los envi\u00f3 para convencer de su error a los que rechazan el domingo y afirmar\u00e1n que se debe obedecer a las leyes del pa\u00eds como a la ley de Dios. Lamentar\u00e1n la gran maldad existente en el mundo y apoyar\u00e1n el testimonio de los ministros de la religi\u00f3n en el sentido de que la degradaci\u00f3n moral se debe a la profanaci\u00f3n del domingo. Grande ser\u00e1 la indignaci\u00f3n despertada contra todos los que se nieguen a aceptar sus aseveraciones. CS 577.1<\/p>\n
La pol\u00edtica de Satan\u00e1s en este conflicto final con el pueblo de Dios es la misma que la seguida por \u00e9l al principio de la gran controversia en el cielo. Ha profesado actuar como representante del cielo, mientras trataba de elevarse por encima de Dios y de mudar su ley. Bajo el reinado de Roma, los que sufrieron la muerte por causa de su fidelidad al evangelio fueron denunciados como malhechores; se los declar\u00f3 en liga con Satan\u00e1s, y se emplearon cuantos medios se pudo para cubrirlos de oprobio y hacerlos pasar ante los ojos del pueblo y ante ellos mismos por los m\u00e1s viles criminales. Otro tanto suceder\u00e1 ahora. Mientras Satan\u00e1s trata de destruir a los que honran la ley de Dios, los har\u00e1 acusar como transgresores de la ley, como hombres que est\u00e1n deshonrando a Dios y atrayendo sus castigos sobre el mundo. CS 577.2<\/p>\n
Dios no violenta nunca la conciencia; pero Satan\u00e1s recurre constantemente a la violencia para dominar a aquellos a quienes no puede seducir de otro modo. Por medio del temor o de la fuerza procura regir la conciencia y hacerse tributar homenaje. Para conseguir esto, obra por medio de las autoridades religiosas y civiles y las induce a que impongan leyes humanas contrarias a la ley de Dios. CS 577.3<\/p>\n
Los que honran el s\u00e1bado de la Biblia ser\u00e1n denunciados como enemigos de la ley y del orden, como quebrantadores de las restricciones morales de la sociedad, y por lo tanto causantes de anarqu\u00eda y corrupci\u00f3n que atraen sobre la tierra los altos juicios de Dios. Sus escr\u00fapulos de conciencia ser\u00e1n presentados como obstinaci\u00f3n, terquedad y rebeld\u00eda contra la autoridad. Ser\u00e1n acusados de deslealtad hacia el gobierno. Los ministros que niegan la obligaci\u00f3n de observar la ley divina predicar\u00e1n desde el p\u00falpito que hay que obedecer a las autoridades civiles porque fueron instituidas por Dios. En las asambleas legislativas y en los tribunales se calumniar\u00e1 y condenar\u00e1 a los que guardan los mandamientos. Se falsear\u00e1n sus palabras, y se atribuir\u00e1n a sus m\u00f3viles las peores intenciones. CS 578.1<\/p>\n
A medida que las iglesias protestantes rechacen los argumentos claros de la Biblia en defensa de la ley de Dios, desear\u00e1n imponer silencio a aquellos cuya fe no pueden rebatir con la Biblia. La corrupci\u00f3n pol\u00edtica est\u00e1 destruyendo el amor a la justicia y el respeto a la verdad; y hasta en los Estados Unidos de la libre Am\u00e9rica, se ver\u00e1 a los representantes del pueblo y a los legisladores tratar de asegurarse el favor p\u00fablico dobleg\u00e1ndose a las exigencias populares por una ley que imponga la observancia del domingo. La libertad de conciencia que tantos sacrificios ha costado no ser\u00e1 ya respetada.
