Chapter 1
1, 2 (2 Timothy 4:6-9). Paul’s Second Letter to Timothy—
This letter was written to Timotheus, the first bishop of the church at Ephesus, after Paul had been brought before Nero the second time to witness with his life to the faith he held. In placing on record this account of his trials through men who turned from the faith, Paul speaks words which should encourage our hearts as we pass over the same ground (The Signs of the Times, July 18, 1907).
Affection Between Paul and Timothy—The apostle’s speech had gained him many friends, and he was visited by persons of rank, who accounted his blessing of greater value than the favor of the
emperor of the world. But there was one friend for whose sympathy and companionship he longed in those last trying days. That friend was Timothy, to whom he had committed the care of the church at
Ephesus, and who had therefore been left behind when Paul made his last journey to Rome.
The affection between Paul and Timothy began with Timothy’s conversion; and the tie had strengthened as they had shared the hopes, the perils, and the toils of missionary life, till they seemed to be as one. The disparity in their ages and the difference in their characters made their love for each other more earnest. The ardent, zealous, indomitable spirit of Paul found repose and comfort in the mild, yielding, retiring disposition of Timothy. The faithful ministration and tender love of this tried companion had brightened many a dark hour in the apostle’s life. All that Melanchthon was to Luther, all that a son could be to a loved and honored father, the youthful Timothy was to the tried and lonely Paul (The Youth’s Instructor, July 10, 1902).

Conscientious obedience to the word of God will be treated as rebellion. Blinded by Satan, the parent will exercise harshness and severity toward the believing child; the master or mistress will oppress the commandment-keeping servant. Affection will be alienated; children will be disinherited and driven from home. The words of Paul will be literally fulfilled: “All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” 2 Timothy 3:12. As the defenders of truth refuse to honor the Sunday-sabbath, some of them will be thrust into prison, some will be exiled, some will be treated as slaves. To human wisdom all this now seems impossible; but as the restraining Spirit of God shall be withdrawn from men, and they shall be under the control of Satan, who hates the divine precepts, there will be strange developments. The heart can be very cruel when God’s fear and love are removed. GC 608.1
As the storm approaches, a large class who have professed faith in the third angel’s message, but have not been sanctified through obedience to the truth, abandon their position and join the ranks of the opposition. By uniting with the world and partaking of its spirit, they have come to view matters in nearly the same light; and when the test is brought, they are prepared to choose the easy, popular side. Men of talent and pleasing address, who once rejoiced in the truth, employ their powers to deceive and mislead souls. They become the most bitter enemies of their former brethren. When Sabbathkeepers are brought before the courts to answer for their faith, these apostates are the most efficient agents of Satan to misrepresent and accuse them, and by false reports and insinuations to stir up the rulers against them. GC 608.2
In this time of persecution the faith of the Lord’s servants will be tried. They have faithfully given the warning, looking to God and to His word alone. God’s Spirit, moving upon their hearts, has constrained them to speak. Stimulated
with holy zeal, and with the divine impulse strong upon them, they entered upon the performance of their duties without coldly calculating the consequences of speaking to the people the word which the Lord had given them. They have not consulted their temporal interests, nor sought to preserve their reputation or their lives. Yet when the storm of opposition and reproach bursts upon them, some, overwhelmed with consternation, will be ready to exclaim: “Had we foreseen the consequences of our words, we would have held our peace.” They are hedged in with difficulties. Satan assails them with fierce temptations. The work which they have undertaken seems far beyond their ability to accomplish. They are threatened with destruction. The enthusiasm which animated them is gone; yet they cannot turn back. Then, feeling their utter helplessness, they flee to the Mighty One for strength. They remember that the words which they have spoken were not theirs, but His who bade them give the warning. God put the truth into their hearts, and they could not forbear to proclaim it. GC 608.3
The same trials have been experienced by men of God in ages past. Wycliffe, Huss, Luther, Tyndale, Baxter, Wesley, urged that all doctrines be brought to the test of the Bible and declared that they would renounce everything which it condemned. Against these men persecution raged with relentless fury; yet they ceased not to declare the truth. Different periods in the history of the church have each been marked by the development of some special truth, adapted to the necessities of God’s people at that time. Every new truth has made its way against hatred and opposition; those who were blessed with its light were tempted and tried. The Lord gives a special truth for the people in an emergency. Who dare refuse to publish it? He commands His servants to present the last invitation of mercy to the world. They cannot remain silent, except at the peril of their souls. Christ’s ambassadors have nothing to do with consequences. They must perform their duty and leave results with God. GC 609.1
As the opposition rises to a fiercer height, the servants of God are again perplexed; for it seems to them that they have brought the crisis. But conscience and the word of God assure them that their course is right; and although the trials continue, they are strengthened to bear them. The contest grows closer and sharper, but their faith and courage rise with the emergency. Their testimony is: “We dare not tamper with God’s word, dividing His holy law; calling one portion essential and another nonessential, to gain the favor of the world. The Lord whom we serve is able to deliver us. Christ has conquered the powers of earth; and shall we be afraid of a world already conquered?” GC 610.1
Persecution in its varied forms is the development of a principle which will exist as long as Satan exists and Christianity has vital power. No man can serve God without enlisting against himself the opposition of the hosts of darkness. Evil angels will assail him, alarmed that his influence is taking the prey from their hands. Evil men, rebuked by his example, will unite with them in seeking to separate him from God by alluring temptations. When these do not succeed, then a compelling power is employed to force the conscience. GC 610.2
But so long as Jesus remains man’s intercessor in the sanctuary above, the restraining influence of the Holy Spirit is felt by rulers and people. It still controls to some extent the laws of the land. Were it not for these laws, the condition of the world would be much worse than it now is. While many of our rulers are active agents of Satan, God also has His agents among the leading men of the nation. The enemy moves upon his servants to propose measures that would greatly impede the work of God; but statesmen who fear the Lord are influenced by holy angels to oppose such propositions with unanswerable arguments. Thus a few men will hold in check a powerful current of evil. The opposition of the enemies of truth will be restrained that the third angel’s message may do its work. When the final warning shall be given, it will arrest the attention of these leading men through whom the Lord is now working, and some of them will accept it, and will stand with the people of God through the time of trouble. GC 610.3
The angel who unites in the proclamation of the third angel’s message is to lighten the whole earth with his glory. A work of world-wide extent and unwonted power is here foretold. The advent movement of 1840-44 was a glorious manifestation of the power of God; the first angel’s message was carried to every missionary station in the world, and in some countries there was the greatest religious interest which has been witnessed in any land since the Reformation of the sixteenth century; but these are to be exceeded by the mighty movement under the last warning of the third angel. GC 611.1
The work will be similar to that of the Day of Pentecost. As the “former rain” was given, in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at the opening of the gospel, to cause the upspringing of the precious seed, so the “latter rain” will be given at its close for the ripening of the harvest. “Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord: His going forth is prepared as the morning; and He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.” Hosea 6:3. “Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for He hath given you the former rain moderately, and He will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain.” Joel 2:23. “In the last days, saith God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh.” “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Acts 2:17, 21. GC 611.2
The great work of the gospel is not to close with less manifestation of the power of God than marked its opening. The prophecies which were fulfilled in the outpouring of the former rain at the opening of the gospel are again to be fulfilled in the latter rain at its close. Here are “the times of refreshing” to which the apostle Peter looked forward when he said: “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; and He shall send Jesus.” Acts 3:19, 20. GC 611.3

Many look with horror at the course of the Jews in rejecting and crucifying Christ; and as they read the history of His shameful abuse, they think they love Him, and would not have denied Him as did Peter, or crucified Him as did the Jews. But God who reads the hearts of all, has brought to the test that love for Jesus which they professed to feel. All heaven watched with the deepest interest the reception of the first angel’s message. But many who professed to love Jesus, and who shed tears as they read the story of the cross, derided the good news of His coming. Instead of receiving the message with gladness, they declared it to be a delusion. They hated those who loved His appearing and shut them out of the churches. Those who rejected the first message could not be benefited by the second; neither were they benefited by the midnight cry, which was to prepare them to enter with Jesus by faith into the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary. And by rejecting the two former messages, they have so darkened their understanding that they can see no light in the third angel’s message, which shows the way into the most holy place. I saw that as the Jews crucified Jesus, so the nominal churches had crucified these messages, and therefore they have no knowledge of the way into the most holy, and they cannot be benefited by the intercession of Jesus there. Like the Jews, who offered their useless sacrifices, they offer up their useless prayers to the apartment which Jesus has left; and Satan, pleased with the deception, assumes a religious character, and leads the minds of these professed Christians to himself, working with his power, his signs and lying wonders, to fasten them in his snare. Some he deceives in one way, and some in another. He has different delusions prepared to affect different minds. Some look with horror upon one deception, while they readily receive another. Satan deceives some with Spiritualism. He also comes as an angel of light and spreads his influence over the land by means of false reformations. The churches are elated, and consider that God is working marvelously for them, when it is the work of another spirit. The excitement will die away and leave the world and the church in a worse condition than before. EW 260.1
I saw that God has honest children among the nominal Adventists and the fallen churches, and before the plagues shall be poured out, ministers and people will be called out from these churches and will gladly receive the truth. Satan knows this; and before the loud cry of the third angel is given, he raises an excitement in these religious bodies, that those who have rejected the truth may think that God is with them. He hopes to deceive the honest and lead them to think that God is still working for the churches. But the light will shine, and all who are honest will leave the fallen churches, and take their stand with the remnant. EW 261.1

Segunda carta de Pablo a Timoteo.-
Esta carta fue escrita a Timoteo, el primer obispo de la iglesia de Efeso, después de que
Pablo compareció ante Nerón por segunda vez para que diera testimonio con su vida de la fe
que profesaba. Al registrar este relato de las pruebas que pasó entre hombres que se habían
apartado de la fe, Pablo habla palabras que debieran reanimar nuestro corazón cuando
pasemos por el mismo terreno (RH 18-7-1907).
Afecto entre Pablo y Timoteo.-
El discurso del apóstol le había ganado muchos amigos, y era visitado por personas de
jerarquía que consideraban la bendición de él de mayor valor que la protección del
emperador del mundo; pero había un amigo cuya simpatía y compañía él anhelaba en esos
últimos días de prueba. Ese amigo era Timoteo, a quien había encargado el cuidado de la
iglesia de Efeso y que, por lo tanto, había quedado lejos cuando Pablo hizo su último
viaje a Roma.
El afecto entre Pablo y Timoteo comenzó cuando éste se convirtió, y ese vínculo se había
fortalecido mientras compartían las esperanzas, los peligros y los afanes de la vida
misionera, hasta que parecía que eran una sola persona. La diferencia de edades y la
disparidad de caracteres hicieron que su amor mutuo fuera más intenso. El espíritu ardiente,
entusiasta, indomable de Pablo, encontraba reposo y consuelo en la disposición suave,
complaciente y discreta de Timoteo. El fiel ministerio y tierno amor de este leal compañero
habían iluminado muchas horas oscuras de la vida del apóstol. Todo lo que Melanchton fue
para Lutero, todo lo que un hijo podría ser para un amado y reverenciado Padre, lo fue el
joven Timoteo para el probado y solitario Pablo (YI 10- 71902).

A los que obedezcan con toda conciencia a la Palabra de Dios se les tratará como rebeldes. Cegados por Satanás, padres y madres habrá que serán duros y severos para con sus hijos creyentes; los patrones o patronas oprimirán a los criados que observen los mandamientos. Los lazos del cariño se aflojarán; se desheredará y se expulsará de la casa a los hijos. Se cumplirán a la letra las palabras de San Pablo: “Todos los que quieren vivir píamente en Cristo Jesús, padecerán persecución”. 2 Timoteo 3:12. Cuando los defensores de la verdad se nieguen a honrar el domingo, unos serán echados en la cárcel, otros serán desterrados y otros aún tratados como esclavos. Ante la razón humana todo esto parece ahora imposible; pero a medida que el espíritu refrenador de Dios se retire de los hombres y estos sean dominados por Satanás, que aborrece los principios divinos, se verán cosas muy extrañas. CS 593.2
Muy cruel puede ser el corazón humano cuando no está animado del temor y del amor de Dios. CS 593.3
Conforme vaya acercándose la tempestad, muchos que profesaron creer en el mensaje del tercer ángel, pero que no fueron santificados por la obediencia a la verdad, abandonarán su fe, e irán a engrosar las filas de la oposición. Uniéndose con el mundo y participando de su espíritu, llegarán a ver las cosas casi bajo el mismo aspecto; así que cuando llegue la hora de prueba estarán preparados para situarse del lado más fácil y de mayor popularidad. Hombres de talento y de elocuencia, que se gozaron un día en la verdad, emplearán sus facultades para seducir y descarriar almas. Se convertirán en los enemigos más encarnizados de sus hermanos de antaño. Cuando los observadores del sábado sean llevados ante los tribunales para responder de su fe, estos apóstatas serán los agentes más activos de Satanás para calumniarlos y acusarlos y para incitar a los magistrados contra ellos por medio de falsos informes e insinuaciones. CS 593.4
En aquel tiempo de persecución la fe de los siervos de Dios será probada duramente. Proclamaron fielmente la amonestación mirando tan solo a Dios y a su Palabra. El Espíritu de Dios, que obraba en sus corazones, les constriñó a hablar. Estimulados por santo celo e impulso divino, cumplieron su deber y declararon al pueblo las palabras que de Dios recibieran sin detenerse en calcular las consecuencias. No consultaron sus intereses temporales ni miraron por su reputación o sus vidas. Sin embargo, cuando la tempestad de la oposición y del vituperio estalle sobre ellos, algunos, consternados, estarán listos para exclamar: “Si hubiésemos previsto las consecuencias de nuestras palabras, habríamos callado”. Estarán rodeados de dificultades. Satanás los asaltará con terribles tentaciones. La obra que habrán emprendido parecerá exceder en mucho sus capacidades. Los amenazará la destrucción. El entusiasmo que les animara se desvanecerá; sin embargo no podrán retroceder. Y entonces, sintiendo su completa incapacidad, se dirigirán al Todopoderoso en demanda de auxilio. Recordarán que las palabras que hablaron no eran las suyas propias, sino las de Aquel que les ordenara dar la amonestación al mundo. Dios había puesto la verdad en sus corazones, y ellos, por su parte, no pudieron hacer otra cosa que proclamarla. CS 594.1
En todas las edades los hombres de Dios pasaron por las mismas pruebas. Wiclef, Hus, Lutero, Tyndale, Baxter, Wesley, pidieron que todas las doctrinas fuesen examinadas a la luz de las Escrituras, y declararon que renunciarían a todo lo que estas condenasen. La persecución se ensañó entonces en ellos con furor; pero no dejaron de proclamar la verdad. El Señor envía al pueblo una verdad especial para la situación en que se encuentra. ¿Quién se atreverá a publicarla? El manda a sus siervos a que dirijan al mundo el último llamamiento de la misericordia divina. No pueden callar sin peligro de sus almas. Los embajadores de Cristo no tienen por qué preocuparse de las consecuencias. Deben cumplir con su deber y dejar a Dios los resultados. CS 594.2
Conforme va revistiendo la oposición un carácter más violento, los siervos de Dios se ponen de nuevo perplejos, pues les parece que son ellos mismos los que han precipitado la crisis; pero su conciencia y la Palabra de Dios les dan la seguridad de estar en lo justo; y aunque sigan las pruebas se sienten robustecidos para sufrirlas. La lucha se encona más y más, pero la fe y el valor de ellos aumentan con el peligro. Este es el testimonio que dan: “No nos atrevemos a alterar la Palabra de Dios dividiendo su santa ley, llamando parte de ella esencial y parte de ella no esencial, para obtener el favor del mundo. El Señor a quien servimos puede librarnos. Cristo venció los poderes del mundo; ¿y nos atemorizaría un mundo ya vencido?” CS 595.1
En sus diferentes formas, la persecución es el desarrollo de un principio que ha de subsistir mientras Satanás exista y el cristianismo conserve su poder vital. Un hombre no puede servir a Dios sin despertar contra sí la oposición de los ejércitos de las tinieblas. Le asaltarán malos ángeles alarmados al ver que su influencia les arranca la presa. Hombres malvados reconvenidos por el ejemplo de los cristianos, se unirán con aquellos para procurar separarlo de Dios por medio de tentaciones sutiles. Cuando este plan fracasa, emplean la fuerza para violentar la conciencia. CS 595.2
Pero mientras Jesús siga intercediendo por el hombre en el santuario celestial, los gobernantes y el pueblo seguirán sintiendo la influencia refrenadora del Espíritu Santo, la cual seguirá también dominando hasta cierto punto las leyes del país. Si no fuera por estas leyes, el estado del mundo sería mucho peor de lo que es. Mientras que muchos de nuestros legisladores son agentes activos de Satanás, Dios tiene también los suyos entre los caudillos de la nación. El enemigo impele a sus servidores a que propongan medidas encaminadas a poner grandes obstáculos a la obra de Dios; pero los estadistas que temen a Dios están bajo la influencia de santos ángeles para oponerse a tales proyectos con argumentos irrefutables. Es así como unos cuantos hombres contienen una poderosa corriente del mal. La oposición de los enemigos de la verdad será coartada para que el mensaje del tercer ángel pueda hacer su obra. Cuando la amonestación final sea dada, cautivará la atención de aquellos caudillos por medio de los cuales el Señor está obrando en la actualidad, y algunos de ellos la aceptarán y estarán con el pueblo de Dios durante el tiempo de angustia. El ángel que une su voz a la proclamación del tercer mensaje, alumbrará toda la tierra con su gloria. Así se predice una obra de extensión universal y de poder extraordinario. El movimiento adventista de 1840 a 1844 fue una manifestación gloriosa del poder divino; el mensaje del primer ángel fue llevado a todas las estaciones misioneras de la tierra, y en algunos países se distinguió por el mayor interés religioso que se haya visto en país cualquiera desde el tiempo de la Reforma del siglo XVI; pero todo esto será superado por el poderoso movimiento que ha de desarrollarse bajo la proclamación de la última amonestación del tercer ángel. Esta obra será semejante a la que se realizó en el día de Pentecostés. Como la “lluvia temprana” fue dada en tiempo de la efusión del Espíritu Santo al principio del ministerio evangélico, para hacer crecer la preciosa semilla, así la “lluvia tardía” será dada al final de dicho ministerio para hacer madurar la cosecha. “Y conoceremos, y proseguiremos en conocer a Jehová: como el alba está aparejada su salida, y vendrá a nosotros como la lluvia, como la lluvia tardía y temprana a la tierra”. “Vosotros también, hijos de Sión, alegraos y gozaos en Jehová vuestro Dios; porque os ha dado la primera lluvia arregladamente, y hará descender sobre vosotros lluvia temprana y tardía como al principio”. “Y será en los postreros días, dice Dios, derramaré de mi Espíritu sobre toda carne”. “Y será que todo aquel que invocare el nombre del Señor, será salvo”. Oseas 6:3; Joel 2:23; Hechos 2:17, 21. CS 596.2
La gran obra de evangelización no terminará con menor manifestación del poder divino que la que señaló el principio de ella. Las profecías que se cumplieron en tiempo de la efusión de la lluvia temprana, al principio del ministerio evangélico, deben volverse a cumplir en tiempo de la lluvia tardía, al fin de dicho ministerio. Esos son los “tiempos de refrigerio” en que pensaba el apóstol Pedro cuando dijo: “Así que, arrepentíos y convertíos, para que sean borrados vuestros pecados; pues que vendrán los tiempos del refrigerio de la presencia del Señor, y enviará a Jesucristo”. Hechos 3:19, 20. CS 596.3

Muchos miran con horror la conducta seguida por los judíos al rechazar a Cristo y crucificarle; y cuando leen la historia del trato vergonzoso que recibió, piensan que le aman, y que no le habrían negado como lo negó Pedro, ni le habrían crucificado como lo hicieron los judíos. Pero Dios, quien lee en el corazón de todos, probó aquel amor hacia Jesús que ellos profesaban tener. Todo el cielo observó con el más profundo interés la recepción otorgada al mensaje del primer ángel. Pero muchos que profesaban amar a Jesús, y que derramaban lágrimas al leer la historia de la cruz, se burlaron de las buenas nuevas de su venida. En vez de recibir el mensaje con alegría, declararon que era un engaño. Aborrecieron a aquellos que amaban su aparición y los expulsaron de las iglesias. Los que rechazaron el primer mensaje no pudieron recibir beneficio del segundo; tampoco pudo beneficiarles el clamor de media noche, que había de prepararlos para entrar con Jesús por la fe en el lugar santísimo del santuario celestial. Y por haber rechazado los dos mensajes anteriores, entenebrecieron de tal manera su entendimiento que no pueden ver luz alguna en el mensaje del tercer ángel, que muestra el camino que lleva al lugar santísimo. Vi que así como los judíos crucificaron a Jesús, las iglesias nominales han crucificado estos mensajes y por lo tanto no tienen conocimiento del camino que lleva al santísimo, ni pueden ser beneficiados por la intercesión que Jesús realiza allí. Como los judíos, que ofrecieron sus sacrificios inútiles, ofrecen ellos sus oraciones inútiles al departamento que Jesús abandonó; y Satanás, a quien agrada el engaño, asume un carácter religioso y atrae hacia sí la atención de esos cristianos profesos, obrando con su poder, sus señales y prodigios mentirosos, para sujetarlos en su lazo. A algunos los engaña de una manera; y a otros, de otra. Tiene diferentes seducciones preparadas para afectar diferentes mentalidades. Algunos consideran con horror un engaño, mientras que reciben otro con facilidad. Satanás seduce a algunos con el espiritismo. También viene como ángel de luz y difunde su influencia sobre la tierra por medio de falsas reformas. Las iglesias se alegran, y consideran que Dios está obrando en su favor de una manera maravillosa, cuando se trata de los efectos de otro espíritu. La excitación se apagará y dejará al mundo y a la iglesia en peor condición que antes. PE 260.1
Vi que Dios tiene hijos sinceros entre los adventistas nominales y las iglesias caídas, y antes que sean derramadas las plagas, los ministros y la gente serán invitados a salir de esas iglesias y recibirán gustosamente la verdad. Satanás lo sabe; y antes que se dé el fuerte pregón del tercer ángel, despierta excitación en aquellas organizaciones religiosas, a fin de que los que rechazaron la verdad piensen que Dios los acompaña. Satanás espera engañar a los sinceros e inducirlos a creer que Dios sigue obrando en favor de las iglesias. Pero la luz resplandecerá, y todos los que tengan corazón sincero dejarán a las iglesias caídas, y se decidirán por el residuo. PE 261.1

Apertura del quinto sello.-
Cuando fue abierto el quinto sello, Juan el Revelador vio en visión debajo del altar al conjunto
de los que habían sido muertos por la Palabra de Dios y por el testimonio de Jesucristo.
Después de esto vinieron las escenas descritas en Apocalipsis dieciocho, cuando los que son
fieles y leales son llamados a salir de Babilonia [se cita Apoc. 18: 1-5] (MS 39, 1906).

7 El león sube de su guarida, y el destruidor de gentes ha partido; salido ha de su asiento para poner tu tierra en soledad; tus ciudades serán asoladas, y sin morador.
8 Por esto vestíos de saco, endechad y aullad; porque la ira de Jehová no se ha apartado de nosotros.
